Mentioning that Ruskin has hinted about "some grievous family misfortune" about which he presumes Rossetti has "perhaps heard already or at any rate will soon hear," and asking whether Allingham knows what Ruskin is alluding to.

Copying out his parody "MacCracken" (first line: "Getting his pictures, like his supper, cheap") and encouraging Allingham to read it alongside Tennyson's "The Kraken." Also copying out his sonnet "Lost on both sides" (first line: "As when two men have loved a woman well"). Discussing mutual acquaintances, including Woolner, Eastlake, Dyce, Mulready, Millais, Hunt, Hannay (and Rossetti's visit to him at Ridge), Munro, and Hughes. Discussing Miss Siddal's health at length, and promising to write about his "own doings" soon. With a postscript mentioning Anna Mary Howitt.

Referencing the illustrations in Poets of the 19th Century, praising Millais and Hunt, and mentioning that he has done four designs. Reporting that he has finished the woodblock (of the illustration for Allingham's poem "The Maids of Elfen Mere") and discussing the publication of Allingham's poems. Mentioning that Moxon asked him to contribute designs (with Millais, Hunt, Landseer, Stanfield, Maclise, Creswick, Mulready and Horsley) for the new edition of Tennyson, and noting that he finds drawing on wood to be "particularly trying to the eyes." Mentioning that he began his class at the Working Men's College the previous evening, noting that it is "quite a separate thing from Ruskin's who teaches foliage." Mentioning that Miss Howitt and Barbara Smith are both ill and alluding to Miss Siddal's health, remarking that she "bears the cold weather ... and of course progresses always as an artist." Mentioning Woolner, Millais, Hunt, Ruskin, and other mutual acquaintances. Remarking on his translation of Italian poetry and copying out his sonnet "A Dark Day" (first line: "The gloom which breathes upon me with these airs").

Stating that his work looks "hopelessly beastly" that morning, and that he will try to revive himself by answering Allingham's letter. Mentioning that Cayley visited the previous evening and discussing his translations [of Italian poetry]. Praising two of Allingham's ballads, noting that one is "one of the very few really fine things of the kind written in our day," and that the other is beautiful except for the last couplet, which is "a little in the broadsheet-song style." Stating that "the subject you propose for my woodcut from it is a first rate one," and reporting that he has "already made some scratches for its arrangement." Asking for his opinion on some revised lines of poetry (the last lines of "Lost on Both Sides") and copying out two sonnets: "The Hill Summit" (first line: "The feast-day of the sun, his alter there") and "The Birth-bond" (first line: "Have you noted, in some family"). Thanking Allingham for praising his poetry, but noting that he is reluctant to publish because "the fact is I think well of very little I have written, & am afraid of people agreeing with me," and mentioning that "I believe my poetry & painting prevented each other from doing much good for a long while -- & now I think I could do better in either, but I can't write for then I shant paint." Discussing designs for the Folio, mentioning ones by Millais, Barbara S[mith] and A.M. H[owitt]. Imagining a lengthy conversation (written out as a play) between Millais, Halliday, Collins and Stephens concerning their and Rossetti's designs for the Folio. Enclosing (not present) an extract about Woolner, promising to send a Hunt letter with his manuscript, mentioning Sutton's poetry and worrying that MacCracken, who has been again in town, is "taking to wild habits."
