Manuscripts in the Albi Rosenthal collection of Monteverdi and the birth of opera, 1579-1966, 1612-1670
Title:
Manuscripts in the Albi Rosenthal collection of Monteverdi and the birth of opera 1579-1966 1612-1670
Manuscripts in the Albi Rosenthal Collection of Monteverdi and the Birth of Opera consist of letters, writings, and music relating to Monteverdi and others involved in the creation of opera in seventeenth-century Italy. Letters of Monteverdi collaborators Claudio Achillini, Jacopo Peri, Ottavio Rinuccini, and other musicians and writers, addressed to third parties or unidentified recipients, concern Monteverdi's music and other music subjects. Other materials include a volume of holograph music by Alessandro Capece and two manuscripts by unidentified writers giving contempory accounts of music performed in seventeenth-century Urbino. Also present are letters of twentieth-century composers Paul Hindemith, Vincent d'Indy, and Gian Francesco Malipiero, concerning Monteverdi's music. Some items are accompanied by notes of former owners, vendor descriptions, transcriptions, or translations, some possibly by French musicologist Henry Prunières.

Title:
An oral history interview with Lotte Lenya / conducted for the Kurt Weill Foundation for Music, [196-] : recording and transcript.
In a wide-ranging interview, Lenya discusses her own childhood and formative years in Zurich and Berlin and proceeds to an overview of Kurt Weill's career from the early operas to the later Broadway shows. She focuses particularly on the relationship between Weill and Brecht and on Brecht's dramatic theories, speculating on her own role in helping to form them. There is much discussion of Die Dreigroschenoper and Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny, along with Die sieben Todsünden, Firebrand of Florence, and Street scene. She also describes reactions of Hindemith, Krenek, Reinhardt, and Klemperer to Weill or his work.

Koussevitzky, Serge, 1874-1951. Serge Koussevitzky Archive, 1920-1976 (bulk: 1924-1951)
Title:
Serge Koussevitzky Archive 1920-1976 (bulk 1924-1951)
The archive is a collection of correspondence, personal and business papers, photographs, and other materials which document some of the most significant aspects of twentieth-century music. Through his work as a conductor and publisher, and his efforts to commission new musical works, Koussevitzky maintained deep ties with many of the finest composers and musicians of the day. These figures are represented in their personal and professional affiliations with the conductor. In addition to serving as a record of Koussevitzky's life and career, the collection extensively chronicles periods in the history of organizations such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Berkshire Music Center, the Koussevitzky Music Foundation, and the American International Music Fund. Material in the collection dates from Koussevitzky's years in his native Russia. The bulk of the collection dates from 1924 to 1951; it also contains material created after Koussevitzky's death, reflecting his widow's continuing work with various organizations and projects. Musical compositions commissioned by Serge Koussevitzky are part of the Serge Koussevitzky Music Foundation Collection, and are shelved in ML30.3c, ML30.3c2, ML30.3c3, and ML30.3e2.

Title:
Lukas Foss papers, circa 1926-2000 (bulk 1936-1995).
The collection documents the life and career of Lukas Foss. The music materials consist of holograph manuscript scores and parts, and sketches. Later compositions, especially those which reflect his interests in twelve-tone and aleatory music, are accompanied by extensive supplementary notes, tone rows, mathematical charts, and performance instructions. Photocopied scores and parts often include annotations by Foss or various conductors and performers. The correspondence contains items to and from such notable musical figures as Luciano Berio, Leonard Bernstein, Pierre Boulez, John Cage, Elliott Carter, Aaron Copland, Henry Cowell, Paul Hindemith, Mauricio Kagel, Yehudi Menuhin, Olivier Messiaen, Eugene Ormandy, Kristoff Penderecki, Mistislav Rostropovich, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Igor Stravinsky, Toru Takemitsu, and Iannis Xenakis. The business papers include correspondence with organizations and lesser known individuals, programs, clippings, and legal or financial documents related to Foss' tenure with various orchestras in the United States and abroad, including the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra, Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition, there is information on many of Foss' commissions, performances, and teaching relationships involving the Buffalo, Chicago, Cincinnati and Cleveland orchestras and the American Symphony, as well as other orchestras, festivals, universities and conservatories across the country. Additional files consist of lecture notes and correspondence with universities, ideas for concert programming, writings by or about Foss, and miscellaneous documents for other topics of interest. The collection also contains Foss' extensive file of correspondence, clippings, notes, programs, and promotional items related to specific musical works.

Saying that all his efforts (chamber and orchestral music) were fruitless, that friends and acquaintances (Scherchen, for example) were of no use because Hindemith and Krenek (and a few dozen "Schnellkomponisten") waited daily with new masterworks, which Lendvai cannot do, mentioning some of his works, Puccini, etc.
