Title: Report on New England, 1676.

Edward Randolph's "Report on New England to the Privy Council," 1676, was organized into a question and answer format with detailed comments on colonial laws that were contrary to English laws, census reports, military provisions, boundary disputes, lack of cooperation with French neighbors, reasons for Indian troubles and terms of treaties, and aspects of the colony's economy. Also included is Randolph's assessment of repeated violations of the Navigation Acts, church government, and Harvard University business. The report contains a letter to the king describing Randolph's "ungracious" reception by Massachusetts officials, his recommendation for a general government to control the region, and a petition dated 1666 and signed by one hundred colonial requesting officials to cooperate with the king. This appears to be a contemporary manuscript copy of Randolph's report.

Also, papers regarding inquiries and complaints surrounding Edmund Andros's discharge of duties as Governor of New York, his role as Governor of the Dominion of New England, subsequent imprisonment by the people of Boston (1689) and recall to England by King William; a letter from Simon Bradstreet to King William regarding the depressed situation of New England following the revolt against the Dominion (1690); and papers regarding the agents sent to England to prosecute charges against Edward Randolph, including a letter from Elisha Cooke in London to Bradstreet.

This is a copy of Edward Randolph's report concerning illegal trade in the middle colonies of Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania. The report describes how the colonists circumvent British trade regulations and suggests ways to prevent illegal activity. This report was influential in framing the Navigation Act of 1696. Written in a contemporary secretarial hand accompanied by the signature of Edward Randolph.

Colonial Massachusetts and New England documents collected by Thomas Prince for his "Chronological History of New England in the Form of Annals" (1736). Included are letters to and from influential political figures in colonial Mass., among them Sir Edmund Andros, Joseph Dudley, John Cotton, Simon Bradstreet, Joseph Hinckley (Prince's maternal grandfather), Edward Randolph, Elisha Cooke, and Jacob Leisler. Among the topics discussed are the governments of the Massachusetts and Plymouth Bay Colonies, the Territory and Dominion of New-England following the revocation of the Mass. Bay charter in 1684, the imprisonment of Andros and Randolph in 1689, and relations between England and the colonies. Also included are Cotton and Increase Mather papers and other Cotton and Mather family papers, and letters between Prince and his brother Nathan.
