In the back are copies of 61 sales of proprietors' rights in Georgia, Saint Albans, Swanton, and Highgate, Vermont from 1773-1782, mostly to Levi Allen, and a few to Ira Allen. There is also an index of these sales.

Two indentures dated November 15, 1788, serving as binding land deed contracts in the purchase of two different parcels of land in Saint Albans, Vermont. One denotes a sale from Levi Allen of St. John's, Quebec to Asa Wyman and the other is from Levi Allen to Asa Wyman for Timothy Rogers. This collection also includes a typescript with a list of other indentures of Saint Albans, Vermont.

Allen, Ira, 1751-1814. Papers, 1772-1809. [microform].

The papers of Ira Allen span the years 1772-1809 and consist of a wide array of correspondence, land papers, and business receipts. Boxes 1-6 contain correspondence which document Allen's early activities in Vermont as well as his imprisonment in Europe from 1797-1800. Early letters find Allen actively surveying the boundaries of Vermont and include correspondence with James Whitelaw. Arriving in Europe in 1796, many of Allen's letters are addressed to the Duke of Portland proposing his Lake Champlain/St. Lawrence River canal. Later, while imprisoned in France, many of Allen's letters are addressed to French Minister of Police in quest of a passport home. As a whole, the collection documents the rise and fall of Allen's political and personal fortunes from his entrance into Vermont to his return to the state after his European imprisonment.

Accounts noted in Halifax currency for Levi Allen's commerce in hardware and other products conducted in Canada and Vermont. Merchandise sold or traded included dry goods, hardware, flour, pease, rum, and timber. Payment was frequently in goods or labor and services. Many notations about his debtors give Allen's descriptions and opinions about them. A few account entries pertain to Ethan Allen at Sunderland, Vermont, in 1787, and many entries pertain to Ira Allen. Last entries seem to pertain to Levi Allen's expenditures while imprisoned.

The Sparks collection consists of original and transcribed historical documents and correspondence, chiefly concerning the American colonies and the original thirteen states, collected or transcribed beginning in 1819 by Jared Sparks. The collection includes the papers of Sir Francis Bernard and George Chalmers, letters of Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, the Marquis de Lafayette, and George Washington, the journals of Thomas Ainslie, the Board of Trade, the New York Provincial Congress and Conventions, as well as the papers and records from state public offices, among many others. The Sparks collection also contains his own historical essays and compositions, published articles, letter books, diaries, account books related to his college days, professional research, and material documenting his tenure as College president.

The papers of Levi Allen are an interesting set of both personal and business correspondence which serve to reveal the character of a little known Allen brother. The papers range in years from 1772-1801 and find Allen at many locales while pursuing his mercantile business. Letters from Allen originate in Boston, Philadelphia, New York, Savannah, and Quebec and London. Many of Levi's letters are to his wife Nancy and to Ira, his brother. Other notable correspondents are Samuel Rogers, preacher and elected Bishop of Vermont, and Hugh Finlay, Canadian merchant who was responsible for the establishment of the Provincial postal service. Box 2 folder 4 contains a 1797 note book of Allen's which is full of poetry, historical observations, and memoirs written in a humorous/sarcastic fashion. Though neither the diplomat or frontiersman like his brothers Ira and Ethan, Levi maintained his own brand of the indefatigable character known to the Allen family.
