The Papers of Lauretta Bender, 1897-1987, consist manily of records of the years 1926-1968 while Bender's chief professional work was concentrated at Bellevue and Creedmoor Hospitals. The collection consists mainly of typescripts of profesional correspondence and manuscripts, along with a smaller quantity of personal papers, photographs, and other memorabilia. The majority of the records however, document a large number of important, continuously innovative activities in child psychiatry outside these institutions. They attest to the energy and enthusiasm which Bender seems never to have lost for her work. Further, they document both Bender's extensive activities and those of her most important mentor, her first husband, Paul Schilder, whose papers are included as a sub-group in the collection. Also, by virtue of the involvement of both Bender and Schilder, these papers focus on much of what was being discussed in the field of psychiatry at that time. Speaking generally, Bender pioneered in the use of art therapy for children, most notably the use of puppet shows at Bellevue, but music therapy and graphic arts work as well. She championed the use of drugs and shock treatment to treat mental illnesses that were not amenable to less drastic forms of treatment. She ineracted effectively with a large number of persons, and both her professional and personal correspondence (boxes 1-7, 5) attest to many fruitful, pleasant relationships with colleagues of varying stature. The records also document her assistance in building organizations and schools dedicated to helping mentally disturbed children, and her seemingly tireless participation in event after event designed to forward the study of psychiatry or to benefit mentall ill persons. She wrote prolifically herself and also brought out a mass of materials left behind by Paul Schilder after his untimely and unexpected death (boxes 9 and 18-21). Bibliographies of both Schilder's and Bender's writings are located among their personal papers (boxes 15 and 22).

Also included are photos of herself, including a small album from her Rockefeller Fellowship in Amsterdam, 1926-1927; some early family photos, 1890's; photos of colleagues; typescripts of her writings including book reviews, articles, a 1946 radio program "The Influence of Radio, Motion Pictures, and Comics on Children;" and studies including studies of children in wartime, 1940's, the effects of comic books on juvenile delinquency, and Father Divine and his followers. Newsletters, minutes, memos, and correspondence document Bender's involvement with the League for Emotionally Disturbed Children, 1951-1958; Society for Biological Psychiatry, 1956-1966; American Academy of Child Psychiatry, 1952-1960; American College of Psychiatrists, 1953; THE NERVOUS CHILD (quarterly periodical); and the National Mental Health Foundation, 1948-1949. Conferences with which she was involved such as the joint meeting of the Japanese Society of Psychiatry and Neurology and the American Psychiatric Association, Tokyo, 1963, and the International Congress for Psychiatry, Zurich, 1958, are documented with correspondence, photos, and memos.
