Louis I. Kahn was born in Estonia and raised in Philadelphia. He was trained in architecture in the Beaux-Arts tradition at the University of Pennsylvania under Paul Philippe Cret. As a mature architect, Kahn was distinguished from his contemporaries (in a period dominated by the International Style) by his unique personal philosophy of architecture and a style marked by a profound sense of history and pure geometry in design and the texture of materials in construction. His legacy is as much in his teaching and his unbuilt designs as in his major built works. He lectured and wrote on architecture beginning in the 1930s. He taught at Yale University from 1947 to 1955 and was Cret Professor of Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania from 1956 until his death.

The First Unitarian Congregational Society of Rochester, New York was established in 1829. In 1959 the Congregation commissioned architect Louis I. Kahn (1901-1974) to design what would become its fourth home. The new church and school was dedicated on November 18, 1962. A later addition, also designed by Kahn, was completed in 1969 to house additional meeting rooms for the church's school.

Kahn's major built works include: Yale University Art Gallery; Alfred Newton Richards Medical Research Building, University of Pennsylvania; Salk Institute for Biological Studies, La Jolla, California; First Unitarian Church and School, Rochester, New York; Performing Arts Theater, Fort Wayne, Indiana; Eleanor Donnelley Erdman Hall, Bryn Mawr College; Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, India; Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Capital of Bangladesh, Dhaka, Bangladesh; Library, Phillips Exeter Academy, Exeter, New Hampshire; Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth, Texas; Yale Center for British Art. When Kahn died unexpectedly of a heart attack in 1974, two of his most important works, the Yale Center for British Art and the national capital of Bangladesh at Dhaka, were still under construction. After his death, his office was closed, but his former associates completed, when possible, the projects under construction.

Kahn designed and built a new building for Temple Beth-El of Northern Westchester, located in Chappaqua, New York, from 1966 to 1972. Leonard Feldman, a practicing architect, served on the congregation's Building Committee. He was born on May 4, 1921 in New York City and served in the Air Force during World War II. He received the degree of B. Arch. in 1947 from New York University and worked for a number of firms before establishing his own practice in White Plains, New York.

Title:
Louis I. Kahn architectural records for the First Unitarian Church, Rochester, New York, 1959-1967.
The materials in this collection were preserved and given to the Architectural Archives by the First Unitarian Church, Rochester, New York. The collection comprises twenty-nine drawings (eight original drawings and twenty-one prints) which were presented to the church's Building Committee at various times during the design process (1959-1963) and one architectural model, ca. 1967. Some of the drawings are annotated and rendered by Kahn, and this unique body of material reveals Kahn's design of this building as it was shaped through months of dialogue and collaboration with the Building Committee. The model includes Kahn's later addition to the school, but the collection contains no drawings for the addition.

The collection comprises Feldman's papers related to the Building Committee during the period from 1966 to 1970. Materials in the collection reflect the congregation's role as client in the development of the architectural design. The collection contains a small amount of correspondence with Kahn and his office. The collection contains no architectural drawings. These materials were stored together with Louis I. Kahn's own office files in the Architectural Archives from 1995 to 2004. It is possible that these materials have been cited in scholarly writing as Louis I. Kahn Collection, LIK Box 9.

Title:
Joseph W. Molitor architectural photographs, 1935-1985 (bulk 1946-1980).
The bulk of this collection consists of more than 22,000 black and white photographic negatives and more than 10,600 black and white photographic prints documenting commercial, institutional, religious, and residential architecture throughout the United States, with particular emphasis on sites in the mid-Atlantic region. These images date from the mid-1930s to Molitor's retirement in the mid-1980s, with the great majority of images created between 1946 and 1980. Also included in the collection are images of landscapes, industrial design, portraits, and events of personal significance to Molitor. In some select cases, color prints, color negatives, color transparencies, and 35mm slides are also available in addition to or instead of the black and white negatives and prints. Researchers are also advised that documents in this collection indicate that when faced with a lack of storage space in 1973, Molitor contacted clients to return inactive negatives that they had comissioned before 1955. In at least some cases, those clients declined to accept their negatives and Molitor subsequently destroyed the images. Thus, this collection has lacunae in the negatives series.

Jonas Salk Papers, 1926 - 1991
Title:
Jonas Salk Papers, 1926 - 1991
Papers of a noted physician, virologist, humanitarian, and founder of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in San Diego, California. Salk is best known for his development of the world's first successful vaccine for the prevention of poliomyelitis, licensed in the U.S. in 1955. He has also conducted important research in the prevention and treatment of influenza, multiple sclerosis, cancer, and acquired immune deficiency syndrome. He served on the faculty of the University of Michigan (1942-1947), the University of Pittsburgh (1947-1963), and as Director of the Salk Institute (1963-1975). His numerous writings have appeared in scholarly and popular journals, and he is the author or co-author of five books, including MAN UNFOLDING (1972) and THE SURVIVAL OF THE WISEST (1973). He has worked for a wide variety of humanitarian efforts, and has served on the board of directors of many organizations, including the MacArthur Foundation, the Dreyfus Fund, and the Epoch B Foundation. The Salk Papers constitute an exhaustive source of documentation of Dr. Salk's professional activities, but very few materials relating to his personal life can be found in the collection. Most of the papers cover the period from the mid-1940s to the early 1980s. Best documented are Dr. Salk's activities from the mid-1950s to the early 1960s -- activities largely related to the development of the Salk polio vaccine. The papers include general correspondence, files relating to polio, subject files, writings by Dr. Salk, photographs, artifacts, and research materials. Also included in the collection are materials created by Dr. Salk's laboratory staff members and papers generated by offices of the Salk Institute. Prominent correspondents include Basil O'Connor and other officers and staff of the National Foundation - March of Dimes; immunologists Thomas Francis and Albert Sabin; physicist and biologist Leo Szilard; mathematician and philosopher Jacob Bronowski; architect Louis Kahn; and other important figures in the worlds of art, science, education, public administration, and humanitarianism. The papers are arranged in ten series: 1) GENERAL CORRESPONDENCE, 2) POLIO FILES, 3) SUBJECT FILES, 4) WRITINGS, LECTURES AND INTERVIEWS, 5) PHOTOGRAPHS AND OTHER IMAGES, 6) SALK INSTITUTE FILES, 7) FILES OF OTHERS, 8) AWARDS, HONORS AND CERTIFICATES, 9) MISCELLANY, and 10) RESEARCH MATERIALS.Additions to the Jonas Salk Papers processed in 1995 primarily document Salk's fundamental role in the revival of the live versus killed polio-vaccine debate in the mid 1970s and 1980s. Also included in this accession are materials related to the internal affairs of the Salk Institute, dated 1982-1989, files that document the work of the San Diego Growth Management Task Force put together in 1984 by Mayor Roger Hedgecock, materials related to Salk's interest in developing a vaccine for HIV, and files pertaining to Salk's advisory role on a broad range of committees and foundations. The papers include a large correspondence series, polio subject files, writings by Dr. Salk, reports, research materials, and photographs. Title:
Louis I. Kahn architectural records and personal papers, ca. 1908-1984.
This collection comprises the entire professional archive of Louis I. Kahn, with the addition of personal materials. After Kahn's death, his estate faced substantial financial obligations, primarily wages and professional fees to consultants, and the decision was made to liquidate the assets of the firm. The entire archive was purchased in 1976 by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and was placed on permanent loan to the University of Pennsylvania the following year. The trustees of the University assumed responsibility for making the collection available for scholarly research, exhibition and publication. After the projects still under construction at Kahn's death were brought to completion, documentation for those projects was donated to the Architectural Archives by Kahn's former associates. Personal materials were donated to the Architectural Archives by family and friends. Additional materials continue to be received. Architectural drawings in Kahn's own hand include sketches for his built works and also a large number of important designs for works which were never built. His professional writings, published and unpublished, document his personal philosophy of architecture and his perspective on the architecture and urban planning of his time. Substantial documentation is found in this collection for all Kahn's mature works. Materials may include preliminary sketches, schematic drawings, design development drawings, construction drawings, construction photographs, office files and models. In addition, the collection includes photographs of completed buildings by distinguished photographers. Kahn's archive contains drawings by his associates and employees; no attempt has been made to identify and index drawings by a particular associate or employee. Oscar Stonorov and George Howe were his associates for a number of earlier projects. Anne Griswold Tyng made substantial design contributions to several Kahn projects. The national capital of Bangladesh at Dhaka was completed by David Wisdom & Associates (David Wisdom, Henry Wilcots and Reyhan T. Larimer). The Yale Center for British Art was completed by Pellechia and Meyers (Anthony Pellechia and Marshall D. Meyers). Professional correspondence includes letters to and from major architects of Kahn's period. Correspondence has not been indexed. Personal materials include childhood sketches, travel sketches, personal and family photographs, drawing materials and drafting equipment. In addition, a small amount of personal correspondence is found mixed in with professional correspondence. The collection contains only one student drawing from Kahn's architectural education at the University of Pennsylvania.

Title:
Louis I. Kahn sketches for the Kimbell Art Museum, 1967-1969.
This collection comprises design and presentation drawings (34 originals and 6 rendered prints) for the Kimbell Art Museum, Louis I. Kahn, 1901-74, architect. At least twelve drawings in the collection have been identified as sketches by Kahn (many are signed and dated 1967 and one is dated 1969). These drawings include exterior and interior perspectives, plans, and section studies and were likely used to present the evolving design to the Kimbell Art Foundation in 1967. The drawings are rendered in either charcoal and pencil or color pastel on yellow tracing paper or diazotype print. These drawings are exceptional examples of Kahn's later graphic technique and are perhaps among his best architectural drawings. A significant number of original drawings have been identified as sketches by Marshall D. Meyers, who was project architect for the Kimbell. The bulk of drawings by Meyers are design studies focusing on the section and the "natural light fixture."

Patton, George E. (George Erwin), 1920-1991. George E. Patton architectural records, 1939-1990.
Title:
George E. Patton architectural records, 1939-1990.
This collection is the primary archive of the work of George E. Patton, donated to the Architectural Archives by Patton himself just before his death. His architectural drawings alone document 447 projects spanning the years 1939-1990. His extensive office files and photographs (not yet fully described) may identify additional projects. The collection is a rich resource for the study of the practice of landscape architecture in America, for research on the major architects with whom Patton collaborated and for documentation of specific projects and sites. Patton's long association with Louis I. Kahn is an important thread through the collection, and his archives complement the holdings of the Louis I. Kahn Collection at the Architectural Archives. They provide additional documentation for important Kahn projects, as well as insight into Kahn's travel sketches through the remarkable correlation between Patton's photographs made during his 1951 trip with Kahn to Egypt and Greece and Kahn's drawings made on that same trip. The collection also contains significant materials related to projects of Robert Venturi: Fairhill Square, one of Venturi's earliest known projects, and Western Plaza, Washington, DC, among others. A complete list of architects whose work is represented in this collection has not yet been prepared. Patton's archives document many significant sites in the Philadelphia region, including a large number of parks, playgrounds, and recreational sites. His work on academic campuses includes the University of Pennsylvania, Swarthmore College, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, and both the main campus and the Ambler campus of Temple University. Significant work in the city of Philadelphia includes designs for Rittenhouse Square, the courtyard of the Betsy Ross House, the Rittenhouse Hotel and the 1992 restoration of Logan Square on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and its Swann Fountain (originally designed in 1917 by Wilson Eyre and Alexander Stirling Calder). Personal materials (not yet completely described) appear to be limited to intermittent personal correspondence, student drawings, travel photographs and sketches, and materials related to lectures and professional associations. His archives do not appear to contain extensive materials related to his personal and family life or to his teaching at the University of Pennsylvania.

Title:
Marshall D. Meyers architectural records and papers, 1945-2001 (bulk 1957-1980).
The collection comprises student drawings, project-related architectural drawings, photographic materials, professional and personal papers, writings, lectures, interviews, audio tapes, motion pictures, and architectural models. A large portion of this collection relates to the architectural works of Louis I. Kahn. See the Louis I. Kahn Collections (Coll. 030, Coll. 217) for other materials in the Architectural Archives related to Kahn's professional practice. Examples of Meyers' student drawings from both Pratt Institute and Yale University are preserved, along with an extensive number of project-related architectural drawings. Most important is the extensive documentation of the Yale Center for British Art, a project begun in 1967 by Louis I. Kahn and completed after his death by Meyers and Anthony Pellecchia. The collection contains 580 drawings related to this project - presentation, design, construction, and shop drawings, dated 1972-1978. The collection contains plexiglas study models for the Memorial to the Six Million Jewish Martyrs. Meyers was a skilled photographer who produced a remarkable body of images documenting numerous projects by Kahn as well as his own works and travels. Meyers extensive photography of Kahn's Richards Medical Research Building, the Kimbell Art Museum, and the Yale Center for British Art, are unparalleled in quality and variety of views. The collection also contains a small number of images by the following photographers: Elna Wilkinson; Eileen C. Ahrenholtz; Bob Wharton; Gabriel DeLobbe; George Cserna; Cervin Robinson; and Tom Brown. In addition to project photography, the collection includes numerous travel photographs and motion pictures. Of particular note are photographs of the Triennale di Milano, Le Corbusier's Unité d'habitation (Marseille), and the studio of noted sculptor Henry Moore (all taken in 1954), and motion picture images of the Salk Institute of Biological Studies (under construction in 1964) and Expo 67 in Montreal. The collection includes a number of photo portraits and motion pictures of Meyers and his family as well as Louis I. Kahn and B. Frank Schlesinger. One of the most extraordinary items in the collection is an eight minute black & white print (with negative) of the 1961 holiday party at Louis I. Kahn's office. This motion picture is a rare, informal look at Kahn, his staff and friends. Attendees included: Robert Venturi, Alan Levy, Richard Saul Wurman, Robert Le Ricolais, David C.S. Polk, among others. Meyers preserved a substantial number of project and office files. Files related to Kahn projects include "drafting room" files for the Kimbell Art Museum, Inner Harbor project, Memorial to the Six Million Jewish Martyrs, and the Yale Center for British Art. Also related to Kahn are papers documenting his involvement in the planning of the Louis I. Kahn Retrospective project for the Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles) and his pivotal role in preventing a proposed expansion to the Kimbell Art Museum. His files include correspondence with William Jordy, Louis I. Kahn, George Kubler, Paul Mellon, Henry Moore, Robert A.M. Stern, Walter Gropius (to Kahn) and Robert Venturi. Materials related to his professional life are found in his resume and AIA fellowship files. Meyers' experiences working for Kahn are well documented by his numerous writings, lectures and interviews. Of particular note is a lecture he gave on the occasion of the exhibition, "The Construction of the Kimbell Art Museum," held at the Museo d'arte, Mendrisio, Switzerland in 1997-1998. The collection includes his notes for this lecture, a transcript and book manuscript, as well as the slides used (found intact in a carousel). In addition, transcripts and audio tapes document interviews of Louis I. Kahn conducted by Meyers and William Marlin (of Architectural Forum), both from 1972, and William Jordy, from 1973. Personal and family items include richly illustrated reports and figure drawings completed while Meyers was a student at Niagara Falls High School, as well as yearbooks spanning the years he attended that school (1947-1949). Photography, home movies, letters and other family materials are included in the collection along with several notable books, many of which are autographed. These include Robert Venturi's Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture, Venturi, Scott Brown and Izenour's Learning From Las Vegas (a first edition with original dust jacket), Scully's Architecture: The Natural and the Man Made, and Fred Angerer's Surface Structures in Building (cited as the source for the cycloid vault used at the Kimbell Art Museum).

Title:
Norman N. Rice architectural records and papers, 1920-1974.
This collection is the only archive of the architectural work of Norman N. Rice known to the staff of the Architectural Archives. The collection contains drawings for twelve professional projects, 1931-1974, four of which are also documented with photographs. Temple Beth Hillel (Wynnewood, PA) has the fullest documentation: design and presentation drawings, construction drawings, photographs, an office file, and structural calculations by August Komendant. The collection does not contain records for Rice's own house and studio on Fitler Square in Philadelphia nor for several other significant houses Rice designed in and around Philadelphia. Rice was a lifelong friend of Louis I. Kahn, from their years as fellow students at Central High School and the University of Pennsylvania to their years teaching architectural design together at the University. Rice's student drawings and notebook (1920-1924) and his 1972 retrospective notes listing his (and Kahn's) studio professors offer insight into the training he and Kahn received at the University of Pennsylvania. The collection does not contain records of the Master's studio he co-taught with Kahn. The collection also contains Rice's travel sketches (1928-1929) and a brief memoir of his time working in the office of Le Corbusier (1929-1930). The collection contains no materials related to Rice's family nor any other materials unrelated to architecture.
