Kellogg, Frank B. (Frank Billings), 1856-1937. Frank B. Kellogg papers, 1890-1942 [microform].
Title:
Frank B. Kellogg papers, 1890-1942 [microform].
Correspondence, memoranda, speeches, background materials, clippings, memorabilia, and other papers of this U.S. senator from Minnesota (1917-1923), ambassador to Great Britain (1923-1925), secretary of state (1925-1929), and judge on the Permanent Court of International Justice (World Court) (1930-1935). Besides reflecting the issues and activities associated with these positions, the papers also provide considerable information about state and national Republican party politics, and about U.S. politics in general. Lesser amounts of material document his organizational memberships and activities, business affairs, career as St. Paul (Minn.) lawyer, and family matters. None of his official dispatches as ambassador or secretary of state are present. Papers from Kellogg's service as ambassador provide information on the European military, diplomatic, social, and economic scene; revision of the schedule of World War I reparations payments by Germany; and the official and social life of an ambassador.

Neve, Frederick W. (Frederick William), 1855-1948. Papers : of Frederick W. Neve, 1911-1970.
Title:
Papers : of Frederick W. Neve, 1911-1970.
All of the papers relate to Neve's missionary work in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, beginning in 1888 at St. Paul's Church, Ivy (Albemarle County) and Emmanuel Church, Greenwood (Greene County) and his founding of the Order of the Thousandfold there in 1920, dedicated to accomplishment through prayer. The collection contains religious editorials and poetry (1919- 1948), some in issues of Episcopal publications including "Our Mountain Work in the Diocese of Virginia" (edited by Neve), "The Virginia Churchman," and "The Southern Churchman, " and some published separately, including the booklet "Challenge for Christ and other Poems." Autobiographical works include two 1930 typescripts (with handwritten corrections) entitled "An Early Account of Mountain Work," a 46-page booklet published in 1920 entitled "Church of the Living Waters" and typescript and handwritten copies of "An Autobiography" dictated to his daughter in 1940. Writings about the Order of the Thousandfold include pamphlets, a notebook in Neve's hand about the origin and purpose of the order, and a scrapbook of clippings from various publications. Nineteen diaries (1917-1947) are included, as well as two guestbooks (1918, 1938) from the thirtieth and fiftieth anniversary celebrations of Neve's work at St. Paul's, Ivy, and a few photographs, including some of Neve and some of Lady Astor. The 300 items of correspondence (1909-1948) contain an interesting group of letters from Lady Astor, a Virginia native who had attended Neve's church with her family during summer visits at their Albemarle county estate. These chiefly describe her domestic life in England, with a few comments on religion and politics. Photocopies sent by the University of Reading, England, of Neve's letters to Lady Astor are also included. Other correspondents include bishops Walter Russell Bowie, William Cabell Brown, Henry W. Hobson, Edmund Arbuthnott Knox, Noble Cilley Powell, Beverley Dandridge Tucker, and Henry St. George Tucker. Missionary correspondents include Anne P. Bridgman from Damascus, C.L. Oliver from Australia, Emily L. Ridgely from China, M. Lawrence Ryan from Damascus, Loreto Serapion from Cuba, E. Stieljes from the Netherlands, J.G. Williams from Brussels, and John Yasofi from Brazil. The collection also includes letters from Irene Langhorne Gibson, Lady Astor's sister, and Jessie Ball duPont, letters from Neve to Dewey Loving, and a few items of Rev. Dennis Whittle's correspondence while serving as Archdeacon of the Blue Ridge after Neve.

Title:
Katherine Mayo papers, 1835-1968 (inclusive), 1918-1940 (bulk).
Correspondence, diaries, writings, photographs, scrapbooks, research materials, and miscellanea documenting the personal life and literary career of Katherine Mayo, an author of several historical and investigative articles, essays, and books from 1896 to 1940. Correspondence files document the detailed literary research Mayo conducted and the strong public reaction generated by her writings. This is particularly true for such works as: Justice to All (1917), The Isles of Fear (1925), and Mother India (1927). Diaries provide sporadic information on the daily activities of Mayo, while writings include drafts of many works. Photographs and research materials further detail the foreign travels (South America, India, Philippines) and subsequent literary works produced by Mayo. Scrapbooks contain reviews and commentary relating to Mayo's publications. The papers provide information on such diverse topics as life in India, Philippine Islands, South America, and the Pennsylvania state police, George Washington, the Y.M.C.A. during World War I, war veterans of World War I, and the narcotics trade.

Title:
Diary of Lewis Catlett Williams, 1929.
Diary of Lewis Catlett Williams, member of the University of Virginia Board of Visitors from 1922-1946. Most of the entries refer to events at the University and meetings of the Board or matters that concerned it. Williams frequently notes discussing these issues with Governor Harry Byrd. Topics of interest include the selection of a new president for the University of Virginia to replace E.A. Alderman; the controversy caused by David Hepburn's charges of excessive drinking at the University; selection of an architect and site for dormitories; professor's salaries. Also of interest are an entry noting dining with President Alderman's with President Coolidge who "said nothing"; one relating an anecdote about Winston Churchill and Lady Astor; one commenting on Virginia going Republican in the election of 1928; and one deriding John Lloyd Newdomb as a presidential candidate, stating he "does not seem to measure up in scholarship, background and culture--Has no ambassadorial qualities." There are also references to his law practice, Richmond civic activities, his church, his membership on the executive committee of the Georgia and Florida Rail Road and his family.

S. Eliot, Graham Greene, Harman Grisewood, Nancy Mitford, Harold Nicolson, Anthony Powell, Osbert Sitwell, and Stephen Spender. The collection also includes considerable research material about Nancy Astor, Robert Byron, and Adam von Trott, subjects of other books by Sykes.

The papers consist of correspondence, speeches and writings, diaries, photographs, extensive material from the presidential campaign of 1924, and material relating to John W. Davis's law practice and public activities. Correspondence makes up two-thirds of the papers including early letters by Davis to his family and his first wife, and letters while ambassador to Great Britain (1918-1923). The largest part of the correspondence is for the period 1924-1955 and concerns Davis's civic and political activities. Papers relating to his law practice in New York, where he was counsel to J.P. Title:
New York Times Company records. Arthur Hays Sulzberger papers 1823-1999
Arthur Hays Sulzberger was the publisher of xxThe New York Timesxx from 1935 until 1961 and chairman of the board of The New York Times Company from 1961 until 1968. While he was publisher, circulation of The Times almost doubled; the editorial page developed a reputation for strong opinions; news events were subjected to more analysis and coverage of specialized topics was strengthened; new sections and departments were created for food, fashion, and women; and the overall style of the paper became less rigid and more aesthetically pleasing. The papers document Sulzberger's life and career at xxThe New York Timesxx, with the majority of the collection relating to Sulzberger's 26 years as president and publisher of the paper. Included in the collection are correspondence with family members, friends, colleagues, world leaders, and other dignitaries; memoranda regarding the business of the newspaper, including Sulzberger's notes of praise and criticism to his editors, managers, and writers; reports on his meetings with world leaders, including Winston Churchill, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Harry S. Truman; and photographs of Sulzberger, his family, business trips, vacations, and The Times' buildings.

Brown, Donaldson, 1885-1965. Papers, 1921-1966.
Title:
Papers, 1921-1966.
These papers relate to Brown's association with General Motors Corp., and reflect his concern with financial policy, organization and operation, and employee relations. They are especially concerned with the period of World War II. Files from the 1920s and 30s describe Brown's effort to relate pricing policies to financial control. Papers from the World War II period document the effects that government regulation had on G.M. There is also correspondence relating to the 1948 antitrust suit which forced the Du Pont Company to divest itself of its holdings in General Motors.

Title:
Papers of Jane Chapman Slaughter, 1809-1951 (bulk 1880-1951).
The collection contains the personal, business and genealogical papers of Miss Slaughter. Much of the personal correspondence is concerned with the Slaughter family of Culpeper and Madison Counties, Va. and was solicited by H.S. Slaughter for his "History and genealogy of the Slaughter family." Drafts of her short stories, family memoirs and poetry are included as well as copies of an article on Governor Spotswood; her proposed book "Democracy, the light from Monticello and those on whom it fell"; her master's thesis "Velázquez and his art"; and her dissertation"Louis Hue Girardin, educator, historian and man-of-letters." With the latter are transcripts of 38 letters between Thomas Jefferson and Girardin. Early family correspondence includes letters on the Virginia political scene in the 1830s. There are scrapbooks of clippings on Virginia genealogy and heraldic studies done by Miss Slaughter; and school and college notebooks of family members. Among the photographs are the Episcopal Church Seminary, Fairfax County, Va.; the Rapid Anne Episcopal Church; the Edmund Randolph home in Richmond, Va.; and Forest View, Madison County, Va. A family photograph, ca. 1942, includes George S. Patton, IV. Of interest are a World War II letter from George S. Patton; a letter from Lady Astor; and the 1942 statement of purpose of the Southern Conference on Race Relations.
