This collection documents the work of Ira Berkow, an American sportswriter. Berkow was born in Chicago, Illinois on January 7, 1940 and attended Roger C. Sullivan High School in the Rogers Park section of Chicago, where he graduated from in 1957. His college career began at Miami University (BA, 1963) and ended at Northwestern University (MSJ, 1965). His first post as a sportswriter was with the (1965-1967). He then moved on to the syndicated news service Newspaper Enterprise Association where he worked as a columnist and writer from 1967-1976. In 1981, he started as a sports feature writer and columnist for the . He remained at the NY Times until his retirement in 2007. This collection contains correspondence and photographs of Ira Berkow and documents his relationship with leaders in sports, politics, religion, and the arts. Weekly 30-minute NBC radio broadcasts, featuring classical and light classical music, which began on Apr. 29, 1940 and continued until 1958. In September, 1959, the Bell Telephone Hour made its television debut as a monthly musical special. It remained a regular television program until April 26, 1968. Library's holdings incomplete. Broadcasts chiefly originated from New York City, sponsored by the Bell Telephone Company (American Telephone and Telegraph). Each 30-minute program generally features a guest singer or instrumentalist, with the Bell Telephone Hour Orchestra, conducted by Donald Voorhees, and the Bell Telephone Hour Chorus. Frequent guest artists include Marian Anderson, Robert Casadesus, Nelson Eddy, Josef Hofmann, Fritz Kreisler, Oscar Levant, James Melton, Grace Moore, Ezio Pinza, Lily Pons, Bidú Sayão, Gladys Swarthout, John Charles Thomas, Helen Traubel, and Eileen Farrell. Terry Southern (May 1, 1924-October 29, 1995) was an American author, essayist, screenwriter and university lecturer, noted for his satirical style. The Terry Southern archive spans the years 1924 to 1995, with the bulk dated 1955 to 1995. The collection consists chiefly of autograph and typescript drafts of Southern's novels, stories, screenplays, television scripts; journals, diaries, and notebooks. Other materials include incoming and outgoing correspondence, photographs, personal and financial papers and documents (including passports, hunting license, mortgage documents, bank statements, and canceled checks), publishing contracts, newspaper clippings, and realia, including his typewriter. American author and Duke University alumnus. The William Styron Papers span the years 1855-2007, with the bulk of the papers being dated between 1943 and 1996. The collection consists of correspondence; writings by Styron and other authors; printed materials (including serials containing articles by and about Styron and his work as well as newspaper and magazine clippings); audiotapes, videotapes, and photographs; legal and financial papers; speeches and addresses; interviews; scrapbooks; and other material relating to Styron's personal life and his career as a writer. Extensive personal and professional correspondence between his family, friends, and fellow authors provides insight into his education at Duke University (particularly his studies with Professor William Blackburn of the Department of English) as well as his literary career and personal life.

Russell and Volkening is one of New York's oldest literary agencies, opened in 1940 by Diarmuid Russell and Henry Volkening. They represented some of the most noted writers in the history of American publishing, including Eudora Welty, Bernard Malamud, Anne Tyler, George Plimpton, Barbara Tuchman, Saul Bellow, Ann Petry, A. J. Liebling, and Nadine Gordimer. Included in the collection are business correspondence; financial material; inventories and submission records of manuscripts submitted to the agency and through the agency to publishers and others; some manuscripts; and other material regarding the business of the agency. The bulk of the collection is represented by correspondence between Diarmuid Russell, Henry Volkening, Timothy Seldes, and other agents and their clients, notably Eudora Welty, Barbara Tuchman, Mavis Gallant, May Sarton, George Plimpton, Anne Petry, Wright Morris, and many others.
