Lawyer and judge.
Judge.
Samuel Irving Rosenman (1896-1973), lawyer and presidential advisor, was a graduate of Columbia Law School, and joined the New York Bar in 1920. He served as a member of the New York State Legislature from 1922 to 1926 and then became the State's legislative bill drafting commissioner. In 1929, he was appointed Counsel to Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt. He held this position until 1932 when he was chosen by Roosevelt to fill a vacancy on the New York Supreme Court. He was re-appointed to the bench the following year and was later elected to a fourteen-year term. Rosenman was also an advisor to the President Roosevelt on war manpower, housing, information services, and inflation. He resigned as a justice in 1943 to become Special Counsel to the President. He accompanied Roosevelt on his inspection trip to the Pacific Coast and Hawaii in the summer of 1944 and in February of the next year, went to Europe to survey the problems of providing supplies to the civilian populations of the liberated areas. After Roosevelt's death, Rosenman remained as Special Counsel to President Harry S. Truman until January 1946. He then started a private law practice with the firm of Rosenman, Goldmark, Colin and Kaye in New York City. He later served on several Presidential fact-finding boards.
Attorney, government official.
Rosenman served under Franklin D. Roosevelt as Governor and President. Rosenman was also editor of the PUBLIC PAPERS AND ADDRESSES OF FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT; and served on the New York Supreme Court, 1933-1943.
Justice of the New York Supreme Court, a special council to President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Title:
Papers, 1917-1968 (inclusive) 1934-1955 (bulk).
The largest series in the collection is compositions by Sherwood. This consists of manuscripts in various drafts with revisions and notes of his plays; papers depicting the writing of Roosevelt and Hopkins from research notes and synopses of interviews he conducted to the various drafts of the book from the first version to galley proofs; manuscripts of his articles, short stories, and book reviews; speeches by Sherwood; speeches he wrote for others, especially Franklin D. Roosevelt; and contracts, awards, receipts, and scrapbooks of clippings related to his career. The correspondence falls chronologically and topically into three categories. The smallest category, letters from the 1930s, documents his playwriting and work in Hollywood including discussion of casting and rewriting plays and the relationship between movies and the theater and between entertainment and partisan politics. The bulk of the correspondence, letters from the 1940s, pertains to America's conduct of the war and reflects Sherwood's own career in Washington and London as an American propagandist and speech writer and his efforts to research and write a book on the war. Other correspondence, from the late 1940s until his death, is from Sherwood's wide circle, both national and international, of friends and political colleagues in the liberal wing of the Democratic Party. Also contains a few manuscripts by others and condolence letters to his wife upon his death.

New York Times Company records. Arthur Hays Sulzberger papers, 1823-1999
Title:
New York Times Company records. Arthur Hays Sulzberger papers 1823-1999
Arthur Hays Sulzberger was the publisher of xxThe New York Timesxx from 1935 until 1961 and chairman of the board of The New York Times Company from 1961 until 1968. While he was publisher, circulation of The Times almost doubled; the editorial page developed a reputation for strong opinions; news events were subjected to more analysis and coverage of specialized topics was strengthened; new sections and departments were created for food, fashion, and women; and the overall style of the paper became less rigid and more aesthetically pleasing. The papers document Sulzberger's life and career at xxThe New York Timesxx, with the majority of the collection relating to Sulzberger's 26 years as president and publisher of the paper. Included in the collection are correspondence with family members, friends, colleagues, world leaders, and other dignitaries; memoranda regarding the business of the newspaper, including Sulzberger's notes of praise and criticism to his editors, managers, and writers; reports on his meetings with world leaders, including Winston Churchill, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Harry S. Truman; and photographs of Sulzberger, his family, business trips, vacations, and The Times' buildings.
