Myron Bement Smith collection, circa 1910-1970

Title: Myron Bement Smith collection

The Myron Bement Smith collection consists of two parts, the papers of Myron Bement Smith and his wife Katharine and the Islamic Archives. It contains substantial material about his field research in Italy in the 1920s and his years working on Islamic architecture in Iran in the 1930s. Letters describe the milieu in which he operated in Rochester NY and New York City in the 1920s and early 1930s; the Smiths' life in Iran from 1933 to 1937; and the extensive network of academic and social contacts that Myron and Katharine developed and maintained over his lifetime. The Islamic Archives was a project to which Smith devoted most of his professional life. It includes both original materials, such as his photographs and notes, and items acquired by him from other scholars or experts on Islamic art and architecture. Smith intended the Archives to serve as a resource for scholars interested in the architecture and art of the entire Islamic world although he also included some materials about non-Islamic architecture.

Personal correspondence of James Birtley McNair, chiefly his letters to his brother William Righter McNair and sister Rebecca Sharon McNair. The letters to William Righter McNair, written mostly between 1915 and 1930, discuss his academic studies, career, professional interests, personal and social life, science, politics, and family history. The letters to Rebecca S. McNair, posted from Camp Swift, Tex. in 1942 and 1943, describe McNair's military service, camp life, local news, family matters, etc. There are a few letters from California State Commission of Horticulture regarding McNair's research of citrus diseases in 1909-1910, and several letters related to his genealogical research. Also included are copies and reprints of McNair's scientific articles and papers.

Correspondence, journals, photographs, and miscellaneous materials documenting Blake's study of ornithology; his career with the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, Ill., including specimen collecting expeditions to Venezuela, Guatemala, British Honduras, British Guyana, Mexico, Peru and the Southwestern United States; and his expedition for the National Geographic Society, in which he accompanied a surveying party to the Brazilian-Venezuelan border. Contains correspondence chiefly related to specimen gathering expeditions, but also letters re college life at Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina, Blake's R.O.T.C. light heavyweight boxing championship, and graduate work at the University of Pittsburgh; letter, 23 Feb. 1927, from Emmet Reid ("Snakey") Blake, to his mother, re his decision to make a career in Natural History rather than in laboratory sciences; also materials documenting his service as an officer with the U.S. Army Counter Intelligence Corps in the North African and European theaters of World War II. Contains notes, correspondence and reviews re Blake's published works, which include over one hundred articles and 3 major books: Preserving Birds for Study (1949), a manual for museum research collections; Birds of Mexico, A Guide for Field Identification (1953); and Manual of Neotropical Birds, volume 1 (1977).
