Title: Papers of Henry N. Graven, 1908-1974.

The papers of Henry N. Graven document his legal and judicial career while also reflecting his other interests. The majority of the collection (three of the four series) relate to his work as a lawyer and judge. There are subject files ranging from types of evidence to jury instructions, along with briefs, speeches, and index cards on legal principles. The personal papers section includes even more about his career on the bench, with files on law clerks, some memoirs and tributes, and folders about his retirement. However, this series also reflects the Judge's other interests. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the School of Religion at the University of Iowa and he was very active in the Lutheran Church. Two boxes of correspondence include letters from: Guy M. Gillette, Nelson G. Kraschel, Mason Ladd, and Wiley Rutledge.

Correspondence, writings, speeches, lectures, teaching notes, reports, minutes of meetings, legal briefs, scientific drawings, pamphlets and other printed material, newspaper clippings, maps, photos, memorabilie, miscellaneous honorary degrees, and other papers, chiefly 1910-1964. Includes material pertaining to Pound's participation in the Boston and Cleveland crime surveys (1920's), as a member of the National Commission on Law Observance and Enforcement or Wickersham Commission (1929-1931), as a member of the American Bar Association and with various Masonic chapters, and as advisor to the Ministry of Justice in Nanking, China (1940's). Also two typed, bound journals recounting camping trips in West Virginia and to Civil War battlefields (1898, 1912-1917).

The papers of William F. Riley relate primarily to his career as an attorney in Des Moines, Iowa and U.S. District Court Judge for Iowa's Southern District. However, there is also material concerning his other interests in politics, religion, and education. Correspondence is found throughout the entire collection and includes letters from: Jay N. Darling, Charles A. Dewey, Harold J. Gallagher, Guy M. Gillette, Henry N. Graven, Virgil M. Hancher, Clyde L. Herring, Bourke B. Hickenlooper, Mason Ladd, Karl M. LeCompte, Louis Murphy, Ray Murphy, Seth Thomas, Henry A. Wallace, and W.O. Weaver. Riley was active in the American Bar Association, especially in public relations issues. There are two boxes of files from when he was president of the Iowa State Bar Association. They contain things such as programs, minutes, bulletins, correspondence, etc. The papers also include many of Riley's speeches mirroring his involvement in law, Democratic politics, and religion. William F. Riley helped found the School of Religion at the University of Iowa and was active in alumni activities with the College of Law. An entire box is devoted to his work for the University, with items ranging from alumni articles of incorporation to School of Religion policies to law school reunions.
