Brooks personal correspondence includes ALS from: daughter Caroline; Daniel Brooks; son George; brothers Charles, Franklin (who was seriously in debt and mentally unstable), Hiram, Humphrey, Isaac, and Joshua; Louisa, Mary, and William Brooks; John H. Hartwell; Martha Keith; E.F. Paige (a college friend); and others (among them George B. Emerson, Samuel Hoar, Levi Lincoln, Ezra Ripley, and Samuel Ripley). Correspondence to other Brooks family members includes ALS to Mary Merrick Brooks (e.g. 1863 July 30 From William Lloyd Garrison) and from Mary M. Brooks to Maria Parkman. (Cont.) Series includes material relating to N. Brooks' financial responsibilities for his children, to his political involvements, some deeds, and several genealogical items. The George M. Brooks papers include correspondence (e.g. 1875 ALS from Abigail May Alcott; 1872 ALS from Edward Carver Damon; [1871] Mar. 15 ALS from Sophia E. Thoreau; and ALS from Edward Jarvis, George Frisbie Hoar, and J.S. Keyes), bills, accounts, receipts, deeds, legal papers, passport, and materials relating to Sleepy Hollow Cemetery Fund and Hubbard Estate Improvement. Series also includes 9 v. Correspondence, manuscripts, drawings, and photographs of the Ward and Thoreau families. The correspondence consists of letters to Prudence Ward from Sophia, Maria, and Helen Thoreau and Franklin Benjamin Sanborn's letters to Anne J. Ward (1905, some with enclosed manuscripts). Also included are individual letters by Harrison Gray Otis Blake, Edmund Quincy Sewall, and George Washington Ward. The letters discuss the Alcott family, Mary Merrick Brooks, Lidian Jackson Emerson, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau and the Thoreau family; American Antislavery Society, Cherokee Nation, Southworth & Hawes daguerreotypes, family affairs, social news, etc. Also included are drawings by Sophia E. Thoreau and Prudence Ward and photographs of places and people connected with the Thoreau family and Prudence Ward. The collection contains two pages of proofs of F. B. Sanborn's First and last journeys of Thoreau (1905), his lecture to the Emerson Society, and a typescript of his essay "The Women of Concord."
