The papers of James S. Schramm document his business and political affairs, as well as his activities in the arts. Although the first series is devoted to correspondence, more letters are filed throughout the papers. Some of the correspondents include: Robert K. Goodwin, Edith Gregor Halpert, Dwight Kirsch, David Kruidenier, George Nagel, and Sinclair Weeks. The personal papers grouping relates primarily to Schramm's military service. His speeches, make up the next section, however more speeches are found elsewhere in the papers. The fourth series is titled politics. Political speeches and correspondence are filed here. More than six boxes are devoted to Republican politics. Specifically the topics range from Lincoln Day dinners to Central Committee finances. There are folders on such Republican figures as Gerald Bogan and Nelson A. Rockefeller. The organizations section documents Schramm's association with such divergent groups as the Iowa Economic Council and Amherst College. The next four boxes are comprised of materials relating to U.S. trade missions and the Committee for a National Trade Policy. Included here are speeches, correspondence, policy manuals, etc. The final series concerns art and art collecting. Along with correspondence files there are folders on specific artists such as Mauricio Lasansky. There is also information regarding the Des Moines Art Center and the American Federation of Arts.
