Papers, 1969-2006 (Scattered), and undated, include the papers of both Willard D. "Dean" Memering, 1971-2006 (Scattered), and undated (.5 cubic ft. in 1 box) and Joan Shipers Memering, 1969-2006 (Scattered) and undated (5.5 cubic ft. in 10 boxes, 1 Oversized folder). Dean's papers mainly document his teaching experience in the Dept. of English at Central Michigan University (CMU) and include some Biographical Materials. Joan's papers are divided into the following series: Biographical Materials, 1969-2007 (Scattered), and undated (1 folder); Cambodia Project Materials and Cambodia Related Materials, 1969-2003, and undated (approx. 5 cubic ft. in 9 boxes, 1 folder); CMU Materials, 1983-1992 (Scattered), and undated (.25 cubic ft. in 1 box); and Newspaper Articles (copies), 1975-1995 (Scattered) (.25 cubic ft. in 1 box). The core of the collection is the Cambodia Project Materials and Cambodia Related Materials. Joan befriended and interviewed Cambodian refugees who resettled in the Mount Pleasant area beginning in 1979. She conducted oral interviews with four of them, [Train] Chit, Meng Leng [Phou], Heng Suy Keang, and Nay or Ing Lay. The interviews documented their lives before, during, and after the Vietnamese Conflict. The resulting cassette tapes, transcriptions, notes, and various drafts of chapters of her intended book, as well as materials she compiled to better understand the interviews, such as family trees, lists of family names, vocabulary lists, an English/Chinese/Khmer Translation Phrase Book, and chronologies compose this series. The Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services materials and the only extant documentation of the Mid-Michigan Refugee Action Committee, consisting of Joan's notebook with various loose attachments, are also found in this series. Cambodia Related Materials mostly includes secondary sources, Joan's correspondence to/from/or about Cambodian refugees, and a term paper, with CD, and a letter to Joan, by Michael Phou about his father, Meng Leng Phou, 2003. The Newspaper Articles (copies), 1975-1995 (Scattered), document Joan's writing on a wide variety of topics, including Cambodian refugees. Researchers are cautioned to use the collection, which has a musty smell, with caution if they have allergies or asthma.
