The Governor of Ala. is responsible for making appointments to various state and local offices. This series consists of letters and petitions to Governor Cobb relating to appointments. Some of the petitioners and applicants are seeking to fill the position of circuit court judge in Clarke Co., Marshall Co., and Mobile Co. Other applications and character references pertain to the appointment of a constable in precinct number seventeen in Jefferson Co., the appointment of three inspectors to the Ala. State Penitentiary, the appointment of a county superintendent of education, and the appointment of a notary public in Hamburg beat in Perry Co. The bulk of this series consists of letters and petitions to the governor pertaining to the appointment of three inspectors to the State Penitentiary. Another large part of this series consists of letters and petitions to the governor requesting the appointment of John H. Bankhead to the office of warden of the state penitentiary. One of the correspondents is Jesse Malcolm Carmichael. The last folder in this series consists of petitions from various counties to appoint Bankhead, but the records do not contain dates. The approximate year is 1880. There are two resignations in this series. One is the resignation of the warden of the State Penitentiary and the other is the resignation of a notary public.

Alabama. State Board of Assessment. Minute books, 1870-1882.

Title: Minute books, 1870-1882.

The State Board of Equalization was established by Act 1, Section 26, in 1868. Composed of the State Auditor, the State Treasurer and the Secretary of State, the board was charged to assess the value of the property of railroad companies. The Act also required that the board members keep a record of their proceedings which would be signed by all members present at the meeting and kept in the possession of the Auditor. The board continued to carry out its required functions until 1877 when its name was changed to the State Board of Assessment by Act 62, Section 13. This act required the Governor to serve as president of the board in addition to the three officials already designated to serve as members.
