Signac, Paul, 1863-1935. Letters sent, and Signac family correspondence, 1860-1935.
Title:
Letters sent, and Signac family correspondence, 1860-1935.
The collection contains letters from Signac to several colleagues discussing work in progress, exhibitions, contemporary art, the Société des Artistes Indépendants, and personal and financial matters. A significant number of these letters are addressed to Edouard Fer, a neo-Impressionist disciple whose independent means and connections enabled him to promote Signac's career. Other correspondents include Camille Pissarro, Claude Monet, Georges Turpin, Henri Martineau, Georges Lecomte, and Luc-Albert Moreau. There is also a draft essay for a review of the Exposition des peintres provençaux held in 1902. Most of the letters in this collection are Signac family correspondence; some of these are addressed by Paul Signac to his cousins. (The repository also holds a significant series of Signac's correspondence within the papers of Theo van Rysselberghe, accn. no. 870305.) In his thirty-five letters to Edouard Fer (1916-1932, bulk 1918-1921) Signac discusses the organization of exhibitions, mostly in Switzerland, and the critical reaction to his own work. He does not forget to offer Fer the occasional bit of advice. Other letters include ten to Pissarro (1886-1899) in one of which he comments on Pissarro's stylistic evolution and his own recent landscape painting in the Midi (1897); a letter that recounts the formation of the Société des Artistes Indépendants in 1884 with mention of Redon, Seurat, and Theodore Rousseau; a letter to Georges Lecomte where Signac comments on Symbolism, Puvis de Chavannes, Maximilien Luce, and Lecomte's recent work; a letter from Brussels describing at great length a visit to a foundry (1897); two notes to Henri Martineau pertaining to Signac's study of Stendal (1919, 1928); one letter to an unnamed critic thanking him for a favorable article and describing his trips to Brittany and Provence (1933); and one fragment of a letter in response to an enquete on interior decorating. A draft essay of a review of the Exposition des Peintres Provençaux held in Marseilles in 1902, includes an introductory statement on the exhibition followed by remarks characterizing the work of individual painters including Jean Antoine Constantin, Emile Loubon, Auguste Aiguier, Gustave Ricard, Adolphe Monticelli, and Paul Guigou. Signac family correspondence deals with family life, children, illness, vacations, money worries, marriages, divorces and so forth. A small number of these are written by Paul Signac to his cousins. The rest are between other family members. Most of the letters seem to be about Julie and Alfred Signac's family--Paul Signac's aunt and uncle. Included are letters from his grandmother, grandfather, and cousins.

Marty, Andre, 1857-. Letters and manuscripts received by André Marty, ca. 1886-1911.
Title:
Letters and manuscripts received by André Marty, ca. 1886-1911.
Letters from more than 50 artists and art critics primarily concerning the publication of the print portfolio, L'Estampe originale, but also referring to projects for illustrated books, monographs on art, exhibitions and art criticism. Most letters are addressed to Andre Marty, although a few are to his junior partner, Henri Floury. Included in the collection are two short manuscripts on the decorative arts, by Gustave Geffroy and Octave Uzanne. The letters relating to L'Estampe originale (1893-1895) provide detailed technical information about print states, color, choice of paper, and preferences for particular printers and engravers. They also chronicle the vicissitudes of artistic and journalistic collaboration and offer some clues as to the publisher's marketing strategies. Of particular interest are letters from Georges Auriol (5) about his designs for decorative borders; from the sculptor Alexandre Charpentier (16) discussing his innovative "timbre sec," and dickering over prices; from Maximilen Luce (1) with instructions for printing engravings; from Monet (1) expressing uncertainty about working in lithography; from Roger Marx (23) concerning his preface and the promotion of the portfolios; from Van Rysselberghe (1) promising to enlist other Belgian artists; from Lucien Pissarro (13) about distribution of the publication in England, and his own prints; and from Felix Vallotton (1) regarding control over editions and financial terms. Among the letters containing comments on specific prints and details on technical matters are those from Carriere (13); Signac (1); Joseph Pennell (6); Camille Pissarro (8); and Felicien Rops (3). There are also some from artists who plan to withdraw from the project; for example, Zandomeneghi, Blanche, Khnopff, and Duez. Letters treating other subjects include five from Paul Ranson (n.d.) discussing wallpaper and tapestry designs; letters of 1897 from Ernest Chaplet and Auguste Delaherche about a ceramics exhibition sponsored by Le Figaro; a long, detailed letter from Gabriel Mourey (1893) discussing his plans for a series of monographs on contemporary French and British artists; seven letters (1894-99) from Lucien Pissarro about projects for illustrated books; 2 letters from Paul Signac (1894, n.d.) and a file of letters (34) from Gustave Geffroy on various journalistic matters, including the publication of his collected criticism and the brochure promoting his project for a "Musee du soir." A sketch by Carriere for the cover of the brochure is also included in the collection. In addition to Geffroy and Marx, critics represented by significant groups of letters are Arsene Alexandre, Henry Nocq, Moreau-Nelaton, Thadee Natanson, Felix Feneon, Frantz Jourdain, and Emile Verhaeren. A three-page draft manuscript (n.d.) by Octave Uzanne concerns the subject of art and industry and functionalism in the decorative arts. A one page manuscript by Geffroy (1899) is an open letter to the Director of Fine Arts advocating independent exhibition by decorative artists for the World's Fair of 1900. The collection also includes, under restricted use, photocopies of complementary material dispersed from the Marty archive.

Carré, Ketty, 1882-1964. Memoirs of Montmartre, 1955-1956.
Title:
Memoirs of Montmartre, 1955-1956.
Ketty Carré wrote her recollections about Montmartre in colloquial style and separate installements of a few pages, which she mailed to an old unnamed friend. She addresses him sometimes in the text: "La prochaine fois je vous parlerai de Marcellin Desbouin." Some texts describe the Montmartre where she grew up from the 1880s on, with its streets, groceries, bistrots and restaurants, theaters, circuses, art galleries, and people. The ca. 90 pages are rich in portraits of artists, writers, musicians, and everyday characters (a grocer, a cab driver, a priest, a piano teacher), often mingled with autobiographical details. Short stories about artists from various generations, such as Renoir, Degas, Pissarro, Utrillo, are scattered throughout the manuscript, but some texts are individual biographies dedicated to Suzanne Valadon, Van Dongen, Toulouse-Lautrec, Jules Migonney, Federico Zandomeneghi, Georges Courteline, and others. The text about "le père" Durand Ruel and the art critic Arsène Alexandre ends with a nostalgic "ah, cher ami, quelle epoque merveilleuse!" It is signed.
