The collection consists primarily of manuscript copies of portions of James Habersham's letter books during 1771-1772 when he served as Acting Governor of Georgia. Also included is a manuscript copy of James Habersham's diary dated 1750-1751 and manuscript copies of indentures, letters, and ledgers of John Habersham, Joseph Habersham, Robert Habersham Jr., and Roland Hill compiled in a single letter book. The two letter books of James Habersham's letters contain duplicates. The letter book 2 (August 1771-October 1772) contains the most letters. Habersham's letters are addressed to: Earl of Hillsborough, George Galphin, Capt. James Edward Powell, Lord Charles Greville Montagu, Edward Barnard, William Tryon, John Daniel Hammerer, Joseph Maddock, John Pownall, James Jackson, Francis Williams, John Stuart, Peter Chester, Commissioners of Customs, William Knox, Commissioners for Trade and Plantations, John Moultrie, and Anthony Stokes. Three letters at the end of letter book 2 were written by John Habersham on behalf of his father. Many of James Habersham's letters in this collection were transcribed and published in the Colonial Records of the State of Georgia and Collections of the Georgia Historical Society: The Letters of Hon. James Habersham, 1756-1775. See the collection inventory for publication information and page numbers. Twenty-seven of the forty-nine letters are not published. James Habersham's diary contains entries regarding the arrival of French and German citizens in Georgia, the Rev. John Martin Bolzius, settlement at Ebenezer, Georgia, Trustees appointments, deaths and burials, letter to Capt. David Cutler Braddock, detailed information on cocoons and silk manufacturing, arrival of ships in port, elections, merchants, and mulberry trees. The creator and date of creation of the manuscript copies is unknown. They were likely written during the late 18th and 19th centuries.

Gubbins, M. C. B. Transcripts and abstracts of Moultrie family papers, 1746-1965.

Title: Transcripts and abstracts of Moultrie family papers, 1746-1965.

Collection contains typewritten transcripts and abstracts (1963-1965) of Moultrie family correspondence and estate records, 1746-1829 compiled by M.C.B. Gubbins. Correspondence includes courtship letters (1759-1761) of John Moultrie (1729-1798) at Camp Congaree (S.C.), Camp Ninety-Six (S.C.) and elsewhere to Eleanor Austin (1738-1826). Moultrie discusses the Cherokee War. Other correspondence includes the letters (1746-1748) of John Moultrie of Edinburgh. Letters (1764-1780) of the Austin family include George Austin, Sr. (Eleanor Austin's father), George Austin, Jr., and George Appleby, all of Aston, near Shifnal, Shropshire. Austin letters mention Henry Laurens. Letters to Sarah Moultrie are from her father John Moultrie (1729-1798), her grandfather Dr. John Moultrie (1702-1771), and Uncle William Moultrie (1730-1805). Although most of the correspondence concerns personal and family matters, John Moultrie's military service is also discussed. Estate records include a transcript of the will (1772) of George Austin, Sr., and a "Copy of the sales of effects of estate of John Moultrie" (1772). Collection includes letters (1963-1965) of the compiler and copyist M.C.B. Gubbins which discuss the Moultrie family correspondence.

Manuscript by Drayton, Chief Justice of East Florida, entitled, "An Inquiry in to the Present State, and Administration of Affairs in the Province of East Florida; with some Observations on the Case of the late Ch. Justice there," including appendixes and copies of correspondence, legal documents, and testimony. The manuscript relates to Drayton's disputes with Gov. Patrick Tonyn and Lt. Gov. John Moultrie over the administration of the Colony. Contains references to slavery in Georgia and Florida, to Andrew Turnbull's New Smyrna Colony, and to the cause of the Revolution, especially in Georgia.
