Papers of Jackson Davis, include correspondence, photographs and travel journals, and pertain chiefly to his travels and his work with the General Education Board and the Virginia State Board of Education. Papers from the General Education Board include Davis's 1946 address at the unveiling of a bust of Booker T. Washington at New York University; and statistical summaries on Alabama counties. Davis's diaries/travel journals, 1911, 1913, as state agent for Negro Schools for the Virginia State Board of Education describe his tours through Virginia visiting African American schools and colleges, and discuss the education of African-Americans. Among the schools discussed are Hampton Institute and Virginia Union University. Among the people mentioned are John Stewart Bryan, Wallace Buttrick, A.B. Chandler, Jr., Caroline Preston Davis, K.C. Davis, J. Hardy Dillard, Joseph Dupuy Eggleston, Hollis Burke Frissell, John Manuel Gandy, Leslie Pinckney Hill, George Rice Hovey, Joseph Leonard Jarman, Charles W. The collection contains correspondence, diaries, financial and legal papers, biographical material, photographs, clippings and memorabilia. The correspondence discusses genealogy, A.L. Rives' studies at the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées and his work for the Richmond and Danville Railroad Co., and Amélie Rives Troubetzkoy's 1914 London trip. The financial and legal papers contain a copy of the 1777 will of William Rives of Sussex County and bills from French tradesmen. Genealogical papers trace the Belling, Macmurdo, Page, Starke, Rivers, and Walker families, and biographical material contains information on W.C. Rives, A.L. Rives and Amélie Rives Troubetzkoy. Two childhood journals, 1874 and 1879 of Amélie Rives are present as are her marriage service book, 1896, horoscopes, and clippings regarding her two husbands and her literary career. Of interest is a petition to Napoleon III regarding the arbitration of claims against the American ship General Armstrong. The collection also contains calling cards, passports, invitations, and a poetry album. In the papers are copies and extracts of letters from Joseph Reid Anderson, Winfield Scott Hancock, Richard Stoddert Ewell, Thomas Jonathan Jackson, Robert Edward Lee, Robert McClelland, and Montgomery Cunningham Meigs. There are two telegraph messages from William Tecumseh Sherman and an autograph note of Marie Amelie de Bourbon. The collection also contains miscellaneous financial and legal documents including an 1852 account in Nacogdoches, Texas; a broadside advertising a Grand Military Ball, Capt Carondolet, Manasses, 1862 February 25; a clipping containing a copy of a letter from Jefferson to Madison, 1822 September 5. The collection also contains letters and bills of Charles Cocke to Benjamin M. Perkins, written from New Orleans and Natchez, 1836-1837, mostly concerning transactions in Yazoo River Lands; a genealogies of Benjamin Mosby and the Booker family; George Wythe Randolph is a correspondent.

The collection consists of 12 issues of a hand written and illustrated newspaper issued June 3-September 9 by Betsy Gilmer of Hampden-Sydney, Va. Four of the final issues are mimeographed. The papers record local news in Black Bottom, a section of Hampden-Sydney. Gilmer relates news about friends, family, and neighbors (many of whom are professors at Hampden Sydney including J.D. Eggleston). She includes cartoons, jokes, want ads, weather, and "News of the Boys" in the service. The front page of the June 9th issue is devoted to "D-Day." Other topics include church events, voting for Dewey, promoting of bond and blood drives, and a brief mention of German P.O.W.'s working in the local fields.
