Of primary interest is correspondence with Lucretia Hart Clay (granddaughter of Henry Clay) regarding Clay family history, Smith's 300+ page unfinished history of the early 19th century restoration movement inaugurated in Kentucky by Barton W. Stone, research notes on the Clay family, a 17-page handwritten bio of Henry Clay, and other miscellaneous items pertaining to Kentucky religious history.

Includes correspondence, 1895-1913; legal papers, 1905; bills and receipts, 1898-1904; papers pertaining to the Louisville Legion, 1878-1898; military papers about the Spanish-American War, 1898-1899; military claims, 1899-1905; petitions to become units of the Kentucky State Guard, 1898-1900; a manuscript of "The American saddle horse", material from the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture and from the American Civic Association, and material pertaining to the mail route at Pleasant Hill, Ky., 1900-1904. The majority of the correspondence concerns military affairs: requests for commissions or appointments during the Spanish-American War, information about uniforms and arms, correspondence about the welcome given the 1st Kentucky Regiment upon its return from Puerto Rico. There are several letters about the death of Castleman's nephew, Lt. John B. Galleher, who was killed in battle in Manila in 1900.

The collection consists of letters and other items written by C.I. Caufield, Clerk of the Kentucky Branch Penitentiary. The prison is located in Eddyville, Lyon County, Kentucky. The papers were all addressed to Judge C.W. Lester and Governor William O. Bradley. The documents pertain to grievances at the prison over favoritism, nepotism in hiring and appointments. Other issues include: misappropiation of funds, accusations of wrong doing, and recrimination against people bucking the status quo set forth by the warden, J.H. Happy. Caufield referred to these problems as the Cell Block Conspiracy. These letters eventually led to a court case but it is unclear how it was resolved.
