Account books, 1797-1846, of Abraham Joseph Hasbrouck of Rondout (now Kingston), Ulster County, New York, including ledgers, 1799-1846; daybooks, 1832-1842; steamboat ledgers, 1834-1839; and general accounts recording Hasbrouck's extensive activities as a merchant, freighter, and forwarder operating out of Kingston Landing. Volumes record daily transactions, individual accounts, and financial accounts for individual ships which ran between Kingston Landing and New York City, charges for passenger traffic, freight, commission sales, and retail and wholesale trade in a wide variety of articles, services such as carting, inspection, storage, wharfage, labor, etc. Many accounts are for transactions for lumber, joists, planks, ship knees, staves, etc. Hasbrouck also traded in iron, dry goods, furs, hardware, tools, spirits, flour, fish, plaster, salt, etc. Later records appear to have been kept by Abraham's son, Jansen Hasbrouck. Ledgers, 1799-1846, include cross references to entries in the 25 volume series of general accounting journals, 1797-1842. Many individual volumes include inserted indices. Additionally included is a judgement book, 1820-1845, recording the settlements for disputed accounts decided before local justices. Entries under the name of the presiding justice include the name of the defendent or plaintiff, date of judgement, disputed sums including interest, and the amount of the financial settlement.
