Herbert George Gutman (1928-1985) was a historian and professor of history at Fairleigh Dickinson University and various New York universities. His published works concerned the social and economic structure of American labor. Bulk of the collection consists of Gutman's correspondence and writings. Included are his papers as a student and as a university professor, personal miscellany, research notes, and printed matter. His correspondence with historians, professors of history, academic colleagues, graduate students, and others relates mainly to matters of historical method, to the historiography of the black family and of the working class in America, and to Gutman's and his colleagues' research and writings. Also, papers relative to Gutman's professorships, especially at Fairleigh Dickinson University; manuscripts of his writings including his book The Black Family in Slavery and Freedom, 1750-1925 (1976); and personal miscellany such as photographs of Gutman, his family and associates, and audio tape recording. Correspondents include the American Association of University Professors, Howard K. Beale, Merle Curti, Michael Feldberg, John Hope Franklin, Michael A. Gordon, Samuel Pfrimmer Hays, H. Consists of the vice provost's (1956-1965) and vice chancellor's (1965-2002) files. There are few records from the tenures of George Parkinson (1956-1958) and Charles Vevier (1963-1965). The volume of records created increased after Vevier became vice chancellor in 1965, but most of the records were created in the 1970s through the 1990s by Vice Chancellors William Walters, Norma Rees, John Schroeder, and Kenneth Watters. The majority of the collection documents the vice chancellor's administration of the academic affairs of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) and its centers, colleges and schools. The records concern academic affairs; academic programs; affirmative action; campus planning; centers, colleges and schools; community and teacher education; computing; cooperative programs; ethnic studies and programs; faculty and academic staff; medical education; student affairs; and women's issues.
