An extensive collection of account books and unbound papers, largely of Jacob Wendell. Among the individuals and businesses included (with dates covered) are: Joshua Peirce, 1722-1734; Daniel Rindge, 1748-1750; Samuel Sloper, 1733-1802; Jedidiah Smith, 1786-1809; William Fernald estate, 1790-1802; Abner Newhall, 1801-1803; Meshach B. Trundy, 1818-1842; James Neal, 1832-1837; Abel Weaver, 1840-1874; I. Goodwin and S.E. Coues, 1831-1845; Eagle Insurance Company, 1834-1836; Piscataqua Insurance Company, 1840-1841; and William F. Parrott. There are family papers of the Wendell family as well as family papers of the Dorr and Barrett families, exercises in navigation kept by John Orn and Jacob Wendell, and a memoir of the Wendell family. The collection includes logbooks for several ships, and these have been treated in a separate record: Logbooks from the Wendell Collection, 1783-1844. Similarly, records of three insurance companies are described in a separate record: Records of insurance companies from the Wendell Collection, 1831-1845.

Letter explains that Mrs. Preston had not written earlier since she had not known whether to write to Mrs. Hitchcock at Cazenovia (New York), or at Hartford or Hitchcocksville (Connecticut). It congratulates Mrs. Hitchcock on the birth of a second son [John L. Hitchcock]. Mrs. Preston reports that she was "engaged in a small school in Edgefield Dist. S.C." with nine students. She was boarding in the family of Benjamin Gallman, a wealthy planter, "who has been very kind to me together with all the family." Mrs. Gallman had asked Mrs. Preston to express her love and best wishes to Mrs. Hitchcock, although the two had never met, and "she says I must tell you that I am not half so bad off as you suppose, for that I am right here in a yankee town, surrounded by my friends, and if I would suffer them that they would fairly worship me." The letter speaks further of the generosity of the Gallman family in providing for her needs, even to the point of having bought her a figured silk dress costing $17. Mrs. Preston expected to be in Connecticut by the middle of May or first of June. Among other Northern correspondents mentioned is a man identified only as Dow who had given up the mercantile business and was "manufacturing cabinet furniture at Spencer Huggins' old stand." Letter mentions Mr. Preston but does not identify him by name.
