Rules

William C. Anderson was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania on August 18, 1804. He attended Washington College in Pennsylvania, earning a Bachelor's degree in 1824. Anderson was licensed by the Presbytery of Washington, Pennsylvania on December 13, 1827. He was a missionary in North Carolina from 1827 until 1829 and an agent of the Presbyterian Board from 1829 until 1831. Anderson served as pastor of a Presbyterian church in Pigeon Creek, Pennsylvania, from 1831 until 1836. Between 1837 and 1843, he became Professor of Rhetoric at Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana but resigned the following year. Anderson and his family moved to Dayton, Ohio to pastor a church from 1845 to 1849. In 1849 he was appointed President of Miami University, a post he retained until 1854. During his tenure, Anderson restored Miami to a sound financial footing, while University enrollment nearly quadrupled. After leaving Miami, Anderson returned to ministerial duties, pastoring congregations in Ohio, Indiana, California, and Kansas. He died on August 28, 1870 in Junction City, Kansas.

Correspondence among members of the Ervin family, chiefly 1915- 1960; legal account books of Samuel James Ervin and medical account books of William Caldwell Tate (1808-1869), both of Morganton; short stories and poems by John Witherspoon Ervin; and other items. Most of the correspondence concerns family matters and was addressed to Laura Powe Ervin or one of her daughters, Catherine Ellerbe Ervin (1890-1940) or Jean Conyers Ervin (b. 1909). Some letters from Samuel James Ervin, Jr. (1896- 1985), then U.S. senator, are included. Other material includes legal notes and writings by Samuel James Ervin, Sr., a diary kept in Morganton in the late 1930s by Catherine Ervin, photographs and other material relating to Ervin family history, and files relating to Jean Conyers Ervin's work in speech therapy.

The Anderson Family Collection contains five document boxes of correspondence, diaries, documents, and manuscripts of the four Anderson men. John Anderson's papers are primarily concerned with his ministry although some family material is included. John Byars Anderson's most noteworthy papers are concerned with his railroad activities. Papers pertaining to his involvement in Civil War railroad matters are included. Much of his collection pertains to the financing and construction of the Union Pacific Railway, Eastern Division, being built across Kansas. This later became the Kansas Pacific Railway. Another part of John Byars' collection is letters from 1899 written by Andrew Carnegie to Mrs. Anderson. Carnegie was grateful because John Byars had given him access to his personal library. William Anderson's collection deals with his life as a minister. John A. Anderson's papers deal with his pastorate in California, his Civil War experiences as a chaplain, and his presidency of Kansas State Agricultural College. Very few papers cover his Congressional career or his service as Consul General.
