Title: New Market property records, 1772-1830.

This collection of legal and property records pertains to land of Joseph and Daniel Blake on Charleston Neck, in the village of New Market. Included are affidavits (1819) of George Flagg, Josiah Smith (born ca. 1730), Nathaniel Russell, Jacob Williman, Catherine Davis (daughter of John Watson), Keating Simons, Mrs. C.E. Cobia (daughter of Abraham Spiedal or Spidel), Sarah Johnson (daughter of Thomas Nightingale), James E. Poyas, and John Champneys. These affidavits mainly concern the boundaries and tenants of the Blake land, which was the location of the New Market race course, a rope walk, a farm, and a tree nursery. There are accounts and indentures (1816-1826) pertaining to a rope walk leased by John Robertson, as well as an inventory of property seized there for rent in arrears. The inventory (1826) lists two male slaves, a quantity of hemp, a tar copper, and coils of tarred cordage and bail rope. Early documents include a lease and plat (1772) of 26 acres on Charleston Neck, leased to Abraham Spiedal (Spidell?); and a bond (1773) of James Strickland to Daniel Blake. There are also 19th century copies of earlier documents dating from 1700, including a copy (1819) of a conveyance dated 1700, for 210 acres formerly belonging to Robert Molloch (or Mollock), conveyed by George Logan to Joseph Blake (died 1700). Other documents include a summons in partition (1804) for the estate of John Watson (d. 1789) of Charleston Neck; notes (1820s) by attorney Thomas Parker, (Jr.?), about land "taken from the South part of Blakes tract to erect the lines on"; an undated plat of 104 acres in New Market; a mortgage (1821) on two slaves of John Robertson; and a document marked "lease of William Blake vs. George Archibald--notes for the Record of [Exhibit] in the Pinckney Bundle 1791," regarding a survey. Persons represented include Thomas Gadsden, A.M. Foster, Henry [McNish], Peter S. Gibbs, Richard Henry Peyton, Thomas Bourke, Jesse Nell, William Holiday (or Holliday), Thomas Nightingale, and a Mr. Creighton.
