One photograph album and one box of photos belonging to Samuel Foster McCleary, 2nd City Clerk of Boston, Mass. from 1852-1883. Most of the photographs are commercial cartes de visite and cabinet cards of Napoleon and Josephine Bonaparte and the Bonaparte family, collected for Foster by his wife, Emily T. McCleary. There are also a number of photos of officers in the Civil War, Massachusetts politicians and Boston city government workers, and two portraits of Samuel Foster McCleary himself, among others. Photographers include E. Neurdein (Paris, France), André-Adolophe-Eugène Disdéri (Paris, France), Black & Case (Boston, Mass.), and John Adams Whipple (Boston, Mass.). Includes clippings regarding Napoleon that were removed from the photograph album.

One album containing 103 cartes de visite collected by George Henry Preble, naval officer and author. The photographs include portraits of various members of the French, British, Spanish, and Portuguese royal families, among others. There are also a number of portraits of United States Consuls in foreign ports from 1863 and 1864, as well as of prominent American writers and politicians. Some of the cartes de visite are hand-colored. Photographers include Black & Case, Case & Getchell, and Silsbee, Case & Co. (all of Boston, Mass.), among others.

This collection also includes one photograph given to Eliza Edes Hickling by Helen Denison in Dec. 1894 of an unidentified woman on the banks of the Nile River in Egypt, ca. 1894. The photographer is also unidentified. All photographs are black-and-white.
