Holograph manuscript signed (1730) and written in 1723 and 1724 (cf. p. 491). Topics include the work of Flamsteed, Halley, Newton and Whiston, figuring the golden number and the domenical letter, calendars, the eclipses of 1715 and of 1725-40, and major rivers. Two pages in Latin.

Title: Miscellanea curiosa. [ca. 1705]

Manuscript volume containing extracts from the 1705 compilation Miscellanea curiosa, including multiple articles by Edmund Halley, Isaac Newton and other members of the Royal Society. Written in a neat hand throughout, most articles only vary slighting in wording and spelling from their published versions. The volume also contains several pages of accounts written in a different, slightly later hand.

Ward, Samuel, 1814-1884. Papers, 1647-1912

Title: Samuel Ward papers 1647-1912

Samuel Ward (1814-1884) was an American lobbyist, financier, author, and adventurer. He was the son of the banker Samuel Ward (1786-1839) and the grandson of Samuel Ward (1756-1832) soldier and merchant. His sister was Julia Ward Howe, author of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic". After leaving his father's banking house, Prime, Ward & King, he visited Latin America on behalf of U.S. corporate and government interests. By the end of the U.S. Civil War he was settled in Washington, D.C. where he lobbied the government on behalf of financiers. Collection contains the papers of Ward, his father, his grandfather, and other family members, as well as his collection of autograph letters of mathematicians and scientists. Papers include handwritten and typescript letters, notebooks, transcripts, photographs, and printed matter. Samuel Ward correspondence, 1825-1882, concerns his activities, intellectual and literary matters, and family concerns. Many letters were written by friends who were historical figures. Autograph collection, 1647-1856, comprises letters by famous mathematicians and scientists acquired by Ward with his purchase of the library of mathematician A.N. Legendre. Also, Ward's travel notebooks, and letters, photographs and other papers of various members of the Ward family.

McPike, Eugene Fairfield, b. 1870. Papers, 1898-1946.

Title: Papers, 1898-1946.

Contains McPike's genealogy research in the Halley, Pyke and MacPike families (all English, among others) and his research for the publications: Hevelius, Flamsteed and Halley: Three Contemporary Astronomers and Their Mutual Relations (London: Taylor and Francis, 1937), and Correspondence and Papers of Edmond Halley (London: Taylor and Francis, 1937). McPike also collected and wrote about Sir Isaac Newton. The papers also includes McPike's research materials related to his publications on the international languages Esperanto and Ido. Among his correspondence are letters to and from George Sarton, (the founder of the History of Science Society), the Royal Society of London and Ralph Jermy (R.J.) Beevor.

Concerning his cartographical work, his astronomical observations, and his geodetic measurements which determined the metric unit of length. The letter of 1780 June 7 concerns the cartographical position of Danzig and contains an analysis of various astronomical observations of La Hire, Hevelius, Cassini, Thomas Streete, and Halley; the letter of 1783 Sept. 3 contains a detailed account of his observation of a lunar eclipse. Other letters concern his attempts to make geodetic measurements in southern France and Spain in order to establish the length of the meter. With frequent references to his partner Delambre.
