This collection contains numerous letters to Rossell from various New Jersey lawyers and statesmen. It includes three letters from Thomas Newbold (1760-1823), a U.S. Representative from New Jersey, who informed Rossell of the political atmosphere and events leading to the War of 1812. There is an 1802 letter from Rossell to a French friend that relates family and local news as well as information about the United States political situation. In addition, there is a typed and abridged copy of the will of Peter Dauge/aa ( -1801), a plantation owner from Camden County, N.C., who was the maternal great-grandfather of William Rossell's great-grandson, Hugh Bertrand Rossell (1867- ). The collection also includes an 1858 letter from Jefferson Davis (1808-1889) which refers to Major William Henry Rossell (1820-1885), the grandson of William Rossell and father of Hugh B. Rossell, and a photograph of a portrait of William Rossell, with the family's coat-of-arms and a reproduction of an 1826 handbill issued by the members of the New Jersey Bar in honor of Justice Rossell.
