Margaret Isabella Walker Weber (born 1824) was the daughter of Caroline Mary Mallet and Carleton Walker. The collection contains reminiscences of Walker's childhood at on Walker's Hill, Chatham County, N.C., and in Hillsborough, N.C.; school days, chiefly in Hillsborough; marriage to Professor Johannes Heinrich Christian Frederich Weber (born 1812), who was born in Germany; experiences teaching school in Columbia, S.C., and in several places in Tennessee, including Columbia and Nashville; and some data on the Walker, Mumford, Mallet, and Moseley families. Business, military, and personal correspondence, chiefly 1850s to 1880s. Volumes include diaries, 1856, 1861, 1867-1881, and 1898; Civil War letters and lettercopy books from the conscription office in Raleigh, N.C.; a list of North Carolina merchants visited by Mallett, 1846-1849, with reports and credit ratings of each; and shipping accounts. Also included are thirteen family letters, 1785-1828, of Carleton Walker (the father of Mallett's son-in-law), an English immigrant to Wilmington, N.C.; and an autobiography (typed copy) of Peter Mallett (b. 1744), immigrant from France to Wilmington, N.C., before the Revolution. Includes also the reminiscences of Margaret Isabella (Walker) Weber (b. 1824), daughter of Carleton Walker (b. ca. 1777). and Caroline Mary (Mallett) Walker, who moved with her husband to Tennessee and later taught school in Nashville.
