Title: N.A. Birge papers, 1861-1865 (bulk 1862-1864).

Papers consist of copies of official forms, routine correspondence from army personnel, and a few letters from soldiers. Requisitions, vouchers, and receipts for clothing, camp equipment, transportation, and medical supplies approved by Confederate States Army personnel and referred to Birge for payment during 1862-1864 are included. The impressment of cotton in Texas is discussed in two letters from Lieutenant Colonel W. A. Broadwell, Office of the Cotton Bureau, Headquarters, Trans-Mississippi Department. Also contains one list of conscript Negroes received by Birge in Jefferson, Tx. and dated March 5, 1865. Item lists names, names of owners, residence, description, and value. This item is not on microfilm.

Garrett, Franklin. N.A. Birge transportation record book, 1862-1863.

Title: N.A. Birge transportation record book, 1862-1863.

This volume, probably kept by Franklin Garrett, contains records of transportation tickets issued by assistant quartermaster Captain N. A. Birge, indicating the movement of Confederate Army men and supplies on various railroad, steamboat, and stage lines. Each numbered entry lists the individual's name, rank, and company, and his destination and reason for receiving a ticket. Names of stagecoach stations, distances between stations, and fares are provided. Also recorded is the movement of soldiers on sick leave to and from hospitals at Delhi and Monroe, Louisiana, as well as those soldiers who were on detail to Texas or discharged.
