Collection consists of correspondence, minute books, certificates, ledgers, periodicals and other material relating to the Woodmen of the World fraternal benefits society. The Woodmen formed lodges all over the United States in order to provide benefits to their membership, including life and health insurance, annuities, investments and home mortgages. The organization was formed as the result of a meeting held at the Windsor Hotel in Denver, Colorado in April of 1890.

Quakertown, Pennsylvania, incorporated in 1855, is a town located in the northeast portion of Upper Bucks County. The town remained quite small until the mid-nineteenth century, when the construction of the North Pennsylvania Railroad helped turn it into a significant commercial center. The Quakertown Historical Society collection of ledgers and deeds, 1767-1991, consists of various ledgers from different creators, as well as an assemblage of local deeds. It seems likely that the majority of ledgers are Quakertown Borough records, although many are not clearly identified. The collection also includes record books from Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society, Camp #489 (Quakertown, Pa.), Powelton Cut Glass Company, and several unidentified sources.

Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society was founded in Omaha, Nebraska 1890 as a fraternal benefit society. The organizational structure consisted of a top Sovereign Camp and state-level Head Camps. Local chapters were called simply Camps. The material in this collection is from San Marcos Camp 3270.

The minutes of each meeting list ill members, deaths, and injuries, reflecting support networks developed by women in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The 8 folders of Ettrick Methodist Episcopal Church records (1847-1932) were microfilmed (filed as Miscellaneous reels 767, 768) and the originals returned to the donor in 1980. There is 1 folder of Woodmen of the World papers (1910-1917) filed with Organization Records.

The papers contain copy prints of four photographs: Claire Lee Chennault as a baby (ca. 1893); Claire Lee Chennault as a young boy (ca. 1898); a Woodmen of the World group photograph from Gilbert, La., featuring John Stonewall Chennault, the father of Claire Lee Chennault (ca. 1915-1920); and Claire Lee Chennault while stationed at Maxwell Field, Ala. (ca. 1930-1935). Also included is a copy of a letter by Ernest N. Chennault, son of John Stonewall Chennault and his fourth wife, Dille Elizabeth Young, arguing for the placement of the Chennault house in Gilbert, La., on the National Register of Historic Places.
