The Leroy Sullivan Collection contains correspondence and diaries from a young Flight Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II to his friend back home in Chattanooga, Tennessee. These materials paint a picture of a young homesick enlisted soldier through his training in Canada and his coming of age as he becomes Flight Lieutenant and is sent overseas. His crew is sent to England, then South Africa, Sudan, and Egypt before returning to England. Much of the material relates to daily life in the military. The Leroy Sullivan Collection includes 14 letters to Leroy "Sully" Sullivan's friend, Grady M. Long, detailing his experience in the Royal Canadian Air Force. (Sullivan, an American, enlisted before America entered the war.) Also in the collection are 3 diaries that Sully kept during his military enlistment that detail daily life in a somewhat grittier fashion than the letters to Long portray. Newspaper clippings related to Sully and a photograph of him are also included in the collection.
