Materials accumulated by Mrs. Seth L. Smith in the 1930s as an officer of the United Daughters of the Confederacy in North Carolina. Most items are essays on Confederate and southern topics, narratives of the war based on tradition, and biographical sketches and book reviews submitted in the 1930s as entries in contests sponsored by the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Also included are typescript memoirs of E. D. Dixon, William Edward Brantley, Susan Lennox, J. P. Mullinax, James Reese, and others, regarding their experiences in the Confederate Army and in other capacities in the South during the Civil War, as well as a history of the First North Carolina Cavalry by Minnie Bell, and three letters concerning the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
