Collection contains the papers of the Sedgwick family of western Massachusetts and New York City, specifically those of Theodore Sedgwick (1746-1813), a Federalist legislator and judge; his wife Pamela Dwight Sedgwick (1753-1807); five of their children - Theodore Sedgwick II (1780-1839), Henry Dwight Sedgwick (1789-1831), Robert Sedgwick (1787-1841), Catharine Maria Sedgwick (1789-1867) and Charles Sedgwick (1791-1856); and their children's spouses and descendants, including Theodore Sedgwick III (1811-1859), Jane Minot Sedgwick (1795-1859), Jane Minot Sedgwick II (1821-1889), Henry Dwight Sedgwick II (1824-1903), Elizabeth Ellery Sedgwick (1799-1862), Henrietta Ellery Sedgwick (1829-1902), Katherine Sedgwick Minot (1820-1880) and Alexander Sedgwick (1867-1929). The collection consists of family correspondence, personal and professional papers, literary and political writings, journals, commonplace-books, scrapbooks, and account books. Judge Theodore Sedgwick's papers document his career as an agent for the Continental Army, representative to the Continental Congress, member of the U.S. House of Representatives, justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, and Federalist leader. Other topics include family events, the social and political scenes in Stockbridge and Boston, the mental illness and treatment of Pamela Dwight Sedgwick (1753-1807) and her son Henry Dwight Sedgwick (1789-1831), the literary career of author Catharine Maria Sedgwick (1789-1867), travel of various family members to France and Italy, papers relating to the conversion of Jane Minot Sedgwick (1821-1889) to Catholicism, and New York lawyer Henry Dwight Sedgwick's (1824-1903) work with the New York Underground Railway Company from 1871 to 1892. Also within the collection are the papers of families related to the Sedgwicks by marriage, including the papers of Boston lawyer William Minot (1783-1873), his wife, Louisa Davis Minot (1788-1858), William's father, historian George Richards Minot (1758-1802) and Louisa's uncle, Rev. James Freeman (1759-1835.) Collection also contains papers of the Davis, Dwight, Freeman, Pomeroy, Sergeant, Watts and Williams families, as well as letters of Fanny Kemble Butler (1809-1893). Historical documents acquired by Theodore Sedgwick (1811-1859) include papers of Danish sea captain and inventor John Morke (d.1755), New York Collector of Customs Archibald Kennedy (1685-1763), and British Royal Navy officer Archibald Kennedy (ca. 1723-1794) who commanded the blockade of New York harbor during the Stamp Act crisis of 1765. Also here are papers of New York Attorney General John Tabor Kempe (1735-1792), and Continental Congress President Elias Baudinot (1740-1841), as well as a 1759 orderly book from the Siege of Quebec and papers relating to Shays' Rebellion.

Includes Papers I-III of author Catharine M. Sedgwick. Primarily contains correspondence with Sedgwick family members, most notably her niece Katharine S. Minot, Sedgwick's parents Theodore and Pamela D. Sedgwick, and her brothers Charles, Robert, and Henry D. (1785-1831); and with contemporary literary figures such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, John G. Whittier, and Julia W. Howe. The subjects of the correspondence include her career as a writer, her works, family matters, the abolitionist movement, Unitarianism, and her social position as a single woman. The papers also include her volumes of reminiscences; diaries (1811-12, 1826-39, 1849-54, and 1857-63) kept in New York City, Stockbridge, and Lenox, Mass. and on trips to New York and Canada (1821) and Europe (1839-40). Correspondents include: Elizabeth Dwight Cabot, Edmund Dwight, Mary Harrison Eliot Dwight, Anna Cabot Lowell, Anna Cabot Lowell Dwight Mills, Catherine Eliot Norton, Henry Parkman, Mary B. Parkman, Samuel Parkman, Margarett Searle, Edward Turner Boyd Twisleton, Ellen Dwight Twisleton, and Ellen Twisleton Parkman Vaughan. Letters discuss family, social engagements, and the events of daily life. Elizabeth Dwight Cabot's letters describe London and its tourist sites, society, social customs, and fashions. Edward Twisleton letters discuss Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Browning, whom he and his wife became friendly with in London, and his one meeting with Charlotte Brontë. There are commonplace books, essays, and journals of Mary Eliot Dwight Parkman, as well as compositions by Ellen Dwight Twisleton. Additionally, there are many unidentified poems. Francis Parkman material consists of four letters to Mary Eliot Dwight Parkman.

Others include Joshua Bates, John Murray Forbes, Margaret Fuller, Otto and Jenny Lind Goldschmidt, Augustine Heard, Henry James (the father), Fanny Kemble, Charles Eliot Norton, Elizabeth Peabody, Catherine Maria Sedgwick, Charles Sedgwick, Elizabeth Buckminster Dwight Sedgwick, Celia Laighton Thaxter, and Sarah Butler Wister. Also includes 1 watercolor drawing by Julian Hawthorne, [Floral design], [1859], inscribed by Anna Hazard Barker Ward, "Painted by Julian Hawthorne and given me by him in Rome. 1859." Anna Ward's commonplace book includes 18 pencil, watercolor, and pen and ink drawings by Ward and others, of birds, children, ships, County Sligo (Ireland), and the Rhone River.

The collection consists of one ALS from Fanny Kemble to Charles [Sedgwick?] regarding Kemble's rebuttal letter to the London Times for their unsigned review of Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe charging that the book exaggerated the evils of slavery. Before sending her rebuttal letter, as she explains in this letter, she contacted John T. Delane, editor of the Times, to inquire if the review was his.
