Title:
Subject files on war production programs, 1941-1948.
Files primarily documenting World War II homefront programs established under the Federal Security Administration's Rural War Production Program, particularly its Out-of-School Youths and Adults Program (OSYA), and administered through the St. Louis County Board of Education for the Unorganized Territory. Operated through local schools and communities, the programs included training for and operation of community canneries, farm machinery repair training, the cooperative hiring of a fieldman to advise local creamery and dairy plant managers on testing and improving the quality of their milk and cream, and a potato growing program. The files consist almost entirely of carbon copies of outgoing correspondence. The main correspondents are St. Louis County employees R. B. Aakre, W. J. Kortesmaki, and Roy A. Nelson.

McGee, Gale W. (Gale William), 1915-. Departmental files, 1959-1976.
Title:
Departmental files, 1959-1976.
Department Files are one of many series in the papers of this Wyoming U.S. senator (Democrat) who served from 1959-1977. These files were created during McGee's senatorial tenure and contain mainly corresondence with Wyoming constituents and others nationwide. Letters were filed according to the issue discussed, usually under the name of an executive department. Original folder titles have been maintained. McGee supported U.S. involvement in the war in Vietnam, foreign military aid to contain communism, gas rationing and the 55 mph speed limit, and did not favor the impeachment of President Nixon. These subjects are well represented as well as many military, public welfare, veterans, and Wyoming agricultural and land management issues.

Papers, 1935-2007, of Robert Ball, a career official and commissioner of the Social Security Administration (SSA), who guided the development of the social security system from 1962 to 1973. As commissioner, Ball presided over several reorganizations of the SSA, major expansions of benefits, and the passage of the Medicare Act in 1965, and also served as a member of a number of Advisory Councils for Social Security (1938-1997) and of the President's National Commission on Social Security Reform, which led to a number of amendments to the Social Security Act in 1983. The papers primarily document Ball's career in the SSA, but also concern his many other social insurance and social welfare policy-related activities. The greater part of Ball's career involved social security, and he held a number of posts within the SSA prior to his assumption of the duties of commissioner, including the Head of the Bureau of Old Age and Survivors Insurance (1936-1946); assistant director for program analysis (1949-1952); deputy director (1952-1962); and acting director (1953). He was also a founding member of the National Academy of Social Insurance, is the author or co-author of several books, and has spoken extensively throughout his career. Included are daybooks, correspondence, memoranda, minutes, reports, subject files, notes, speeches, congressional testimony, writings, clippings, photographs, and sound recordings. Principal correspondents include Arthur Altmeyer, Anthony Celebrezze, Wilbur Cohen, John Conyers, Robert Finch, John Gardner, Wilbur Mills, Robert Myers, Elliot Richardson, and Elizabeth Wickenden. Peoples Temple. Peoples Temple records, 1922-1984.
Title:
Peoples Temple records, 1922-1984.
Consists of materials collected by court receiver Robert H. Fabian in his efforts to identify and locate Peoples Temple assets and settle the more than 750 claims that arose from the events of November 18, 1978, when Congressman Leo Ryan, three journalists, and 914 Peoples Temple members died by murder or suicide in Port Kaituma, Jonestown, and Georgetown, Guyana. The collection includes manuscripts, realia, photographs, ephemera, legal documents, court depositions, financial documents, newspaper and magazine articles, and research materials. The first eight series comprise records removed by Fabian from the Peoples Temple offices on Geary Boulevard in San Francisco in the early days of the receivership. The bulk of these records document Peoples Temple operations in California and Guyana between 1965 and 1978, with some materials from the years before 1965, when the church was located in Indiana. The records reflect the church's involvement in all aspects of its membership, including maintenance of housing, medical, car and life insurance; real estate holdings and transfers; divorce, adoption, and custody cases; documents related to various corporations run by Peoples Temple; and materials generated in the procurement and settlement of Peoples Temple Agricultural Mission in Guyana, known as Jonestown. Series 9, Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, and series 10, Federal Bureau of Investigation, include records obtained by the receiver from these agencies to aid in his investigation. Series 11, Peoples Temple of the Disciples of Christ v. Attorney General of California, and series 12, United States v. Peoples Temple, include documents generated from the receiver's office during operations to dissolve Peoples Temple. The materials generated by the reciever date from February 1979 to March 1984, though many files contain earlier materials used as supporting evidence for claims.

Social security project : oral history, 1965-1968.
Title:
Social security project : oral history, 1965-1968.
This project has the dual aim of presenting personal recollections about the origins and early years of social security in the United States, and of exploring the legislative history of medicare. Pioneers in the social insurance movement tell about many who were prominent in its early years, including John B. Andrews, John R. Commons, and Frances Perkins. There are descriptions of the activities and personnel of the American Association for Labor Legislation and the American Association for Social Security. Special emphasis is given to experiences with the Committee on Economic Security and the growth and organization of the Social Security Board. Recollections of early attempts to enact government health insurance, the work of the Committee on Costs of Medical Care and the Committee on Economic Security, the National Health Conference of 1938, the Wagner Bill, 1939, the Wagner-Murray-Dingell Bill, and the Forand Bill, 1957, provide background about the precursors of the medicare program. The bulk of the medicare recollections focus on the period 1960-65. Included are interviews of members of the Social Security Administration, the Kennedy entourage, organized labor, the National Council of Senior Citizens, the United States Senate, the insurance industry, Blue Cross, the House Ways and Means Committee, the American Hospital Association, and American Medical Association. Title:
Isidore Sydney Falk papers, 1918-1984 (inclusive).
The papers consist of correspondence, professional files, research materials, writings, personal papers, and printed matter documenting Isidore Falk's career as an advocate of national health insurance and other programs related to public health. Of particular significance are the materials from his years with the Social Security Board (1936-1954), which document the campaign for government supported health insurance in the United States. Falk conducted public health and medical care surveys for the World Bank in Malaya, Singapore, Panama and the Canal Zone, and also prepared a survey of Union health programs (1958-1960) for the United Steelworkers of America. He founded the Community Health Care Center Plan in New Haven and the files record his activities as director (1970-1979). His active participation in professional organizations is reflected in correspondence and other papers. These papers form part of the Contemporary Medical Care and Health Policy Collection.

Lenroot, Katharine F. (Katharine Fredrica), 1891-1982. Katharine F. Lenroot papers, 1909-1974.
Title:
Katharine F. Lenroot papers, 1909-1974.
Katherine F. Lenroot is best known as the third Chief of the United States Children's Bureau, and materials dating from her service at the bureau (1915-1951) comprise the largest part of this collection. Lenroot continued to devote herself to the field of child welfare after her retirement, and the second-largest part of the collection dates from 1951 to the early 1970s. A few materials from her Wisconsin years are present. The Papers include typescripts and reprints of Lenroot's speeches and writings, her research files, correspondence with various individuals and organizations engaged in the field of child welfare. The collection also contains reports, bulletins, and photographs from conferences organized by the Children's Bureau or attended by Lenroot. Very little purely personal material is found in this collection. The media covered Lenroot and the Children's Bureau on various occasions, and the Papers include a large number of newspaper and magazine clippings. Please note that newspaper clippings are in fragile condition. Official biographical notes and personnel records prepared by the bureau are another biographical source included in the Papers. An overview of Lenroot's career at the bureau and the network she built in the course are represented in the biographical notes, clippings, correspondence, and photographs from her retirement in 1951. Also included in the Papers are certificates of honorary degrees, numerous awards and honorary memberships that Lenroot received from both within and outside the U.S. In addition to the certificates, some folders contain correspondence, photographs, and speeches related to the ceremonies. Along with Lenroot's own writings and printed materials, this collection contains publications by other individuals and child welfare organizations, which Lenroot filed for her own reference; reprints, journals, pamphlets, and clippings. The largest set of works is by Emma O. Lundberg, a co-worker and a close friend of Lenroot's since the 1910s. The collection also includes original manuscripts of Burton Jesse Hendrick, the author of Andrew Carnegie's biography.
