Title: Appointments correspondence, 1825-1829.

The Governor of Ala. is responsible for making appointments to various state and local offices and for signing grants and commissions. This series consists of correspondence relating to appointments, resignations, commissions and contested elections. Included are petitions and letters. The majority are from individuals requesting that they be appointed to a particular office or from individuals recommending someone for a particular job. Positions represented include notaries public, sheriffs, tax collectors, judges, the University of Ala. trustees, the Mobile Harbor Master, the state printer, Land Agent for the University of Ala., Indian Agent, and Sparta Land Office Receiver.

Title: Administrative files, 1831-1835.

This series consists of the administrative files of Governor John Gayle, containing letters, petitions, proclamations, acts, and financial records. Most of the items are letters sent to the Governor, though also included are some copies of Gayle's replies. Topics discussed include Indians, banking, road improvements, state stock, and furniture belonging to the General Assembly. The bulk of the series consists of proposals submitted to the Governor by various individuals for the printing and binding of Aiken's Digest of the Laws of the State of Ala and documents relating to the Creek Indian removal controversy. Of particular interest is a letter from David Crawford, Mobile Court Solicitor. Crawford includes a letter sent to the Mobile police by James McKee of Wilmington, N.C. McKee's letter informs the police that a slave named Jacob Cowan had been ordered to leave the area for distributing the "infamous" pamphlet, David Walker's Appeal. He was ordered to be sold to an interior state and was now residing in Mobile, Ala. Crawford wrote to Gayle to inform him of the situation and to urge that action be taken against slaves circulating "seditious" materials. Other items of interest relate to the conflict between Creek Indians and white settlers in eastern Ala. and the U.S. Bank. Also included is one letter concerning the removal of the Cherokee Indians from the area. Prominant correspondents include Jeremiah Austill, William Rufus King, John Murphy and Lewis Cass. Included is a handwritten copy of Gayle's proclamation "to the citizens of the counties situated in the Creek Nation," 1833 Oct. 7; and a handwritten copy of a letter sent by Gayle to "the former Chiefs and head men of the Creek Indians," 1834 June 16.

Title: Messages to the General Assembly, 1826-1827.

This series contains several messages and supporting documents from Gov. John Murphy to the Ala. General Assembly. Included are correspondence, reports and accounts. The most detailed messages concern reports of commissioners appointed to run a dividing line between Ala. and Ga. and to adjust unsettled accounts between Ala. and Miss. Other topics discussed include Creek Indian treaties, the location of a branch of the Bank of the U.S. in Mobile, and the Tombeckbee Bank. The series also contains Murphy's comments on a bill concerning land for the State capitol in Tuscaloosa and a copy of the 1825 annual report of the Board of Trustees of the University of Ala.

The bulk of the collection consists of letters sent to Gov. Murphy. Topics discussed include banking, the settlement of accounts between Miss. and Ala., the survey of the boundary line between Ala. and Ga., land sales, the move of the state capitol from Cahaba to Tuscaloosa, contested elections, state agricultural development, the Ala. Salt Works, and expenses relating to Gen. Lafayette's 1824 visit to the State. Specifically the files contain information concerning the Bank of the State of Ala., the Mobile branch of the Bank of the United States, the removal and sale of public property from the Cahaba capitol, the return of the remains of former governor Israel Pickens from Cuba, the survey of the Muscle Shoals area of the Tenn. River and the embezzlement of public funds by John Archer, former tax collector for Mobile County. Correspondents include Nicholas Biddle, John Boardman, Gerard C. Brandon, Thomas Fearn, Thomas Casey, Andrew Henshaw, David Hubbard, Seth Hunt, William Kelly, John McKinley, Samuel Pickens, John Terrell, and Marmaduke Williams.

Title: Correspondence, 1821-1865.

This series consists of letterbooks containing copies of letters to and from the Governor, 1821-1849, 1861-1865. Most of the copies are of outgoing letters, though some incoming letters are also included. Some of the letters are routine in nature and may have been written for the Governor by the Secretary of State. Many of the letters concern important administrative decisions or express the opinion of the Governor on controversial subjects. Included are letters of Governors Pickens, G. Moore, S. Moore, Murphy, Gayle, Clay, Bagby, Fitzpatrick, Martin, Chapman, Shorter and Watts. Topics discussed include slavery, public lands, banks and banking, the militia, Indian affairs, internal improvements, surveys of boundary lines with Ga. and Fla., social welfare, state finances, the 1840s war with Mexico and the Civil War. Of particular interest are Gov. Gabriel Moore's views on prison reform, Gov. Gayle's position on the removal of white settlers from Creek Indian lands in 1833, the removal of the Cherokee Indians from the state, Ala.'s participation in the Mexican War, and the Civil War. The bulk of the Governors' incoming correspondence is described in the various series of each Governor's administration. The 1861 Dec. 5-1863 May 12 letters are indexed alphabetically by correspondent's name.

Title: Pardons, paroles and clemency files, 1826-1828.

The Ala. Governor has the power to grant commutations to persons under sentences of death and to remit fines and forfeitures. This series consists of letters, petitions, affidavits and remission certificates relating to pardons from crimes, parole from sentences and remission of fines imposed. Most of the letters and petitions support a person's request for pardon or remission and may describe the crime or circumstances in detail. The crimes committed include assault and battery, murder, defaulting as overseer of roads, shooting a mule, horsestealing and larceny. Crimes of note include John Crawford, Jailer of Mobile Co., fined for the negligent escape of a prisoner from the jail; Jesse Farrar, Sheriff of Monroe Co., charged with neglect of official duties; Moses M. Posey convicted of passing counterfeit two dollar bills; Sally Kelly, a pregnant woman who committed larceny in Shelby Co.; five slaves belonging to Major Elijah Montgomery of Mobile Co. who murdered their overseer L. Magee; and Moses, a Tuscaloosa Co. slave convicted of arson. Other persons with numerous requests for clemency include Robert and Hoykey Bevil, Samuel Calhoun, John Downey, Robert Farrell, George Goodwin, Hanson H. Hurt, Levi Leonard, Charles MacKay, William Moyler, William Price, James Rogers, Joseph Scarborough, Henry Tunnage and Thomas Woodfin.
