Title:
The arguments upon the abdication of King James ye 2d. Martis 22 die Jany. 1688, [1698].
Manuscript, in a single hand, of a copy of a report of proceedings and speeches in both houses of Parliament between January and February 1688. The manuscript concerns the abdication of King James II, and the bulk of the speeches concern the term "abdication" as opposed to "desertion," and which of these terms most accurately describes the actions of James II. Speeches draw on Latin etymologies; historical precedents of abdications; and a discussion of whether a kin is able to renounce his kinship at all. Speech-givers include Sir George Treby; Daniel Finch, Earl of Nottingham; Henry Hyde, Earl of Clarendon; Sir Robert Howard; and Thomas Herbert, Earl of Pembroke. The manuscript is dated "Woolavinton [Somerset] August ye 23 1698."

The committe : a comedy / written by the Honourable Sr Robert Howard. 1664.
Contemporary manuscript transcription of Sir Robert Howard's play The committee, which was never published separately, but appeared first in his Foure new plays (1665). Most of this manuscript appears to have been written by Howard himself -- particularly the title page, list of persons and parts of Acts I and III. The rest of the transcription was written by an amanuensis. For more information, see note of 14 October 1960 from dealer H.W. Edwards in the Clark Library institutional archive.

Title:
Valentinian, or, Lucina's rape [manuscript], ca. 1679.
Differs from the play as printed, particularly in arrangement of the scenes in Acts II and III, and in omitting the songs. Folger MS and British Library Add. MS 28692 apparently are earlier versions of the play than that printed 1685. Cast list is given, but there is no record of such a production, which must have been before July 1679; see Montague Summers, Playhouse of Pepys, p. 291. Also, at end, a scene of Sir Robert Howard's play, The conquest of China, by Rochester (contemplated in 1672). This has been printed in 1926, edited by John Hayward. Rochester's Valentinian is based on Fletcher's play of the same name.

[Engraved copper printing plates for twelve portraits in Thane's British autobiography] [realia] [ca. 1793-1798]
Twelve copper printing plates engraved for John Thane's British autobiography: a collection of fac-similes of the handwriting of royal and illustrious personages, with their authentic portraits, published in three parts between 1793 and 1798 (though the British Library and DNB date them earlier to 1788-1793). The published work contained a total of 248 plates. Thane was a dealer in prints, mdels and manuscripts, with an interest in antique portraits and autographs. Many of the plates carry the information that the originals were in his own collection.
