Title:
Records of the John Lane Company, 1856-1933 (bulk, 1894-1930).
The records of the John Lane Company comprise correspondence, readers' reports, manuscripts and proof copies, financial records, documents, and autobiographical materials. Series I of the John Lane Company Records comprises the correspondence and other records reflecting the activities of this firm, its officers and authors from 1856 to 1933, with the majority dating from 1894 to 1930. The correspondence is largely business-related, although the personal correspondence of John Lane is intermixed. Correspondents include Francis P. Barnard, Horace Bleackley, John Buchan, Walter Crane, Arthur Dasent, Richard and Edward Garnett, Kenneth Grahame, Constance Hill, Stephen Leacock, Vernon Lee, Richard Le Gallienne, William J. Locke, Alice and Wilfrid Meynell, Stephen Phillips, Margaret W. Roberts, Clement K. Shorter, Edward P. Stebbing, A. Francis Steuart, Frank Swettenham, Silvanus P. Thompson, Katrina Trask, William Watson, Theodore Watts-Dunton, and M. P. Willcocks. In addition to the large body of incoming correspondence, there is in the series a quantity of intramural correspondence by members of the firm covering the years 1898 to 1920. A small group of financial records and miscellaneous materials complete the series. The smaller Series II "Creative Work" embraces in the main a large number of readers' reports prepared for the firm between 1894 and 1930. There are no reports for the years 1909 to 1914 nor for 1917 to 1920, but otherwise the coverage appears comprehensive. Also present in this subseries is a small number of manuscripts by Lascelles Abercrombie, William Watson and others. Series III contains a small amount of material relating to John Lane the man. A short autobiographical sketch and notes which appear to be the beginning of a projected history of British art in India are contained in the series, along with fragments relating to Lane. As noted above, a significant amount of his personal correspondence is scattered through Series I.

Title:
Papers, 1773-1935, (bulk 1890-1930).
Comprise correspondence, manuscripts, notes, scrapbooks, clippings, receipts, music scores, and a collection of autographs that reflect Smith's theater career and his interest in book and manuscript collecting primarily from 1890 to 1930. Smith collaborated on operas and operettas with Reginald DeKoven, Victor Herbert, Irving Berlin, Ivan Caryl, Jerome Kern, and John Philip Sousa, among others. His correspondence with his collaborators, actors, actresses, and publishers centers around his theater projects and book and manuscript collecting. Smith's own correspondence is interfiled with autograph letters he collected by well-known writers and actors such as Joanna Baillie, Dion Boucicault, George Coleman, Robert William Elliston, David Garrick, Charles John Kean, and Mitchell Kennerley. Writings by Smith include over fifty scenarios, synopses, and musical plays, as well as fictional pieces, articles about collecting books and manuscripts, and notes and drafts for A Sentimental Library (1914), Smith's catalog of his own library. Scrapbooks contain clippings and bibliographic information about a number of authors, including Lord Byron, Dickens, Shakespeare, and Thackeray.

John Quinn papers, 1901-1926
Title:
John Quinn papers 1901-1926
John Quinn (1870-1924) was a corporation lawyer in New York City who amassed an important private collection of paintings, drawings and sculpture as well as books and manuscripts of contemporary authors. In addition to promoting modern and avant-garde art in all forms, he particularly encouraged the work of members of the Irish Literary Revival, the artists of the Paris School, and English and American writers of his time. In 1923 he sold his manuscript and library holdings to subsidize his art collection. Collection consists mainly of correspondence, with writings, printed matter and photographs that document Quinn's artistic and political interests. Correspondence, 1901-1924, is with artists, art dealers, critics, poets, playwrights, booksellers, publishers, and members of his family. Files of letters and letterbooks contain correspondence relating to his interest in the artistic and literary scene in America and abroad, events in Ireland especially during the Home Rule movement, his purchase of paintings, sculpture, first editions and manuscripts of contemporary literature, and the sale of his library and manuscript collection. Also includes typescripts of literary works, typescript of the catalog of Quinn's art collection, ledgers, sales and exhibition catalogs, periodicals, and photographs of Quinn with individual artists and group portraits.

Harris, Frank, 1855-1931. Frank Harris Collection, 1888-1955.
Title:
Frank Harris Collection, 1888-1955.
The Frank Harris Collection, 1888-1955, comprises a large amount of correspondence, as well as manuscripts, passports, and legal documents. Series I contains typescripts for the fifth volume of Harris' autobiography and The New Commandment as well as hand written and typescript versions of several short stories. Notes and fragments are also present for biographies of George Bernard Shaw and Oscar Wilde. The large Correspondence series is largely composed of personal letters to and from Harris, though many of Harris' business deals were tied up with personal matters and thus the letters are hard to classify. Correspondents of particular interest include Reginald Caton, Henry Davray, Helen O'Harris, George Bernard Shaw, Reginald Turner, and Louis Wilkinson. Some of the correspondence is written in French. Series III, Personal Papers, is made up of account books, financial papers, legal documents, and passports. The Helen (Nellie) O'Hara Harris series is made up of a few works by O'Hara and a great deal of correspondence, mostly to her. Her correspondents include many of the same people who wrote to her husband, as well as Harold Auer, Curtis Brown, Edward Root, Abe Tobin, and Lady Warwick. The final series is made up of works and correspondence written by people associated with Harris.
