The legislature created the Ala. Women's Commission in 1971 Nov. It serves as a clearinghouse for legislation and government policy concerning the women of Ala., studies the status of women, and acts as an advisory body to the executive and legislative branches of state government. This series consists of correspondence, committee files, public hearing records, publicity material, minutes, audio cassette tapes of meetings, project files and subject files. The records doument various issues such as education, health and welfare, childcare, the proposed Equal Rights Amendment, sex discrimination, pornography, prison reform, and the Nominations for Women of Leadership Award in 1989. These records were created and maintained by commission chair Margaret D. Sizemore (Margaret Sizemore Douglass after her marriage to Edward Douglass, ca.1983 Jan.) who served as chair from the commission's organizational meeting on 1972 Aug. 23 until 1986 Mar. Subsequent chairs who created and maintained the commission records include Willie Metta Brannon (1986 Mar.-Oct.), Jean Boutwell (1986 Oct.-1992 Dec.), Cynthia Douglas (1992 Dec.-1995 Jan.), and Lenora Pate (1995 Jan.-present). Boutwell also served as the commission secretary from 1973 Jan. until 1986 Oct.
