Letters, manuscripts and printed documents relating to the life and career of Andrew Ross. Three letters to him dating from 1808 are connected to his appointment as governor of Essequebo and Demerara. An 1808 letter from the Governor of Puerto Rico, Toribio de Montes, concerns a proposed exchange of captured slaves between the two warring colonies; another from the same year, from José Felipe Inciarte, sends news of Napoleon's capture of Fernando VII and the subsequent suspension of colonial hostilities between Great Britain and Spain. A draft letter from John Nicholls to Lord Castlereagh discusses the legal problems of the landowners "resident in an enemy territory" due to the wars. Two 1812 letters from Ross to his brother Robert describe the fortress and port of Carthagena and the state of the Allied siege. Two other letters contain Ross family news, including a 1797 draft letter discussing a bill protested against a family member. Manuscripts include a volume of military maneuvers and a naval squadron list. The collection also contains four printed items, including broadside proclamations by Ross and by Francisco de Copons y Navia; a "Companion to Bond's Essequebo and Demerary Almanack for the Year 1808;" and an account statement for a Spanish hospital.
