Actor, scene designer, and lighting designer and innovator; d. 1976.
Donald Mitchell Oenslager, an American stage designer and professor, was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on 7 March 1902. Oenslager began his career in the theater as an actor, working at the Greenwich Village Theatre and the Provincetown Playhouse during the early 1920s. He became interested in theater design after studying in Europe and his first project as a designer was in 1925 for a ballet, Sooner or Later. Oenslager was active as a designer from the 1930's to the 1960s, working on many notable Broadway productions, including Of Mice and Men (1937) and A Majority of One (1959), for which he received a Tony Award. He also served as a faculty member of the Yale School of Drama, teaching design from 1925 until his death in 1975, publishing many works, including Scenery Then and Now (1936) and Notes on Scene Painting (1952). Profoundly influenced by the European stage designers, Edward Gordon Craig and Adolphe Appia, Oenslager brought a new emphasis on symbolism over realism to American theater design. Throughout his life, Oenslager built up an extensive collection of materials on both Craig and Appia. Following his death on 11 June 1975, Oenslager's widow, Mary, gave portions of the Craig material to the New York Public Library's Billy Rose Theatre Division, while other parts of the collection went to Yale University.
American scenic designer and originator of what theatre historian Oscar Brockett described as "theatricalized realism."
American, born France 1901-1976.
Jo Mielziner, theatrical designer.
Set and lighting designer, theater architect and consultant, Jo Mielziner was born in Paris to American parents, but spent most of his life in New York City.
Highly successful, he designed scenes for approximately 270 plays, musicals, revues and an occasional opera, movie and ballet beginning with the Theatre Guild production of THE GUARDSMAN in 1924. Memorable successes include STRANGE INTERLUDE, DEATH OF A SALESMAN, A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, CAROUSEL, THE KING AND I, SOUTH PACIFIC, PICNIC and the opera, THE EMPEROR JONES. His architectural credits include the Vivian Beaumont Theatre, the Mark Taper Forum and special projects such as his work on the New York World's Fair.
Born in Paris in 1901, Jo (born Joseph) Mielziner became in adulthood the quintessential New Yorker, leaving for short periods of time only when it was necessary in his work. His father Leo, of middle-European Jewish ancestry, was an artist in Paris at the time of his birth; his mother Ella Friend, of mixed colonial and recent Irish immigrant heritage, was a correspondent for Vogue Magazine and a freelance journalist. The family returned to America in 1909. Jo and his older brother Leo, Jr. attended the Ethical Culture School in New York but were never graduated. Jo turned to art study at the Pennsylvania Academy of Art in Philadelphia and Leo, Jr. became an actor under the name Kenneth MacKenna.
It was Kenneth who introduced Jo to the theater and urged him to follow a career as a scene designer. He worked as an apprentice and assistant to Robert Edmond Jones and Lee Simonson, both leading exponents of the New Stagecraft, a movement that emphasized the importance of scenery in the interpretation of a play or musical. Their insistence on making the designer a full collaborator in the production process brought a new day to stage art in America. Mielziner struck out on his own, gaining confidence in his ability to ferret out the right scenic metaphor for the production. He soon outstripped his mentors. His first real success was his designing for The Guardsman (1924), an early Theatre Guild production that brought attention to both the producing company and the designer. Between 1924 and his death in 1976, he designed some 270 plays, musicals, revues, and an occasional opera, movie and ballet. Among them were such memorable successes as Strange Interlude, Death of a Salesman, A Streetcar Named Desire, Carousel, The King and I, South Pacific, Of Thee I Sing, the Little Shows, Look Homeward, Angel, Tea and Sympathy, Picnic, the motion picture Picnic, the ballet Slaughter on Tenth Avenue, and the opera The Emperor Jones .
Midway in his career, he turned his attention to the architecture of theaters out of his own displeasure in working in small, cramped and under-equipped stages and auditoriums. Although many of the projects on which he worked never came to fruition, his most notable achievements were the Vivian Beaumont Theatre, the Wake Forest University Theatre, the Power Center at the University of Michigan, Denver Theatre Center, and the Mark Taper Forum. From time to time, he also designed for such special projects as the Vatican display of the Pieta at the New York World's Fair, the White House East Room stage, and the convocation of the United Nations organization in San Francisco in 1945.
Mielziner lived and worked most of his life at the Dakota apartment house in New York, and died suddenly in a taxicab four days short of his 75th birthday.

New York Times Company records. Arthur Hays Sulzberger papers, 1823-1999
Title:
New York Times Company records. Arthur Hays Sulzberger papers 1823-1999
Arthur Hays Sulzberger was the publisher of xxThe New York Timesxx from 1935 until 1961 and chairman of the board of The New York Times Company from 1961 until 1968. While he was publisher, circulation of The Times almost doubled; the editorial page developed a reputation for strong opinions; news events were subjected to more analysis and coverage of specialized topics was strengthened; new sections and departments were created for food, fashion, and women; and the overall style of the paper became less rigid and more aesthetically pleasing. The papers document Sulzberger's life and career at xxThe New York Timesxx, with the majority of the collection relating to Sulzberger's 26 years as president and publisher of the paper. Included in the collection are correspondence with family members, friends, colleagues, world leaders, and other dignitaries; memoranda regarding the business of the newspaper, including Sulzberger's notes of praise and criticism to his editors, managers, and writers; reports on his meetings with world leaders, including Winston Churchill, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Harry S. Truman; and photographs of Sulzberger, his family, business trips, vacations, and The Times' buildings.

Dwight Deere Wiman papers, [microform], 1922-1950
Title:
Dwight Deere Wiman papers, [microform] 1922-1950
Theatrical producer, Dwight Deere Wiman produced 56 plays and musicals in 26 years on Broadway making his most distinctive imprint in the musical comedy and revue fields. He was born on August 8, 1895 in Moline, IL, a direct descendant of John Deere, inventor of the steel plow and founder of what became Deere and Co., the farm equipment company and family business in Moline. After World War I service, graduation from Yale, and two years in the family business, Wiman and friends organized an independent film production company, Film Guild, in Astoria (Queens), 1920-1924. When that dissolved due to marketing difficulties, he formed a partnership in 1925 with William A. Brady, Jr. presenting 23 plays in New York of which 5 or 6, including Road to Rome, were profitable. That partnership ended on friendly terms in 1929 as only Wiman was interested in musical theater. From 1930 until his death on January 20, 1951, Wiman produced and occasionally directed his own shows including works by Paul Osborn, John Van Druten, Clifford Odets and others, and had a long association with Rodgers and Hart. During World War II he was director of entertainment for the Red Cross in Britain. Papers consist of draft and mimeo scripts by Marc Connelly, Howard Lindsay, Clifford Odets, Paul Osborn, Robert E. Sherwood, John Van Druten, and others; programs and playbills; press books; and miscellaneous production materials including set designs by Jo Mielziner. Represented are "Babes in Arms" (1937), "Command to Love" (1927), "The Gay Divorce" (1932), "I Married an Angel" (1938), "Letters to Lucerne" (1941), "The Little Show" (1929), "Morning's At Seven" (1939), "On Borrowed Time" (1938), "The Racket" (1927), "The Road to Rome" (1927), and many other titles. Also included are miscellaneous business records and correspondence, as well as several orchestrations by Frederick Loewe and Arthur Schwartz. A single 1922 contract is all that pertains to his film production company. There is no personal material in the collection.

Harry Weinberger papers, 1915-1944
Title:
Harry Weinberger papers
The papers consist of correspondence, legal papers, notes, and other materials documenting Weinberger's career as a lawyer who specialized in civil liberties cases and, later in his career, copyright law. The one hundred and sixteen (116) case files include legal briefs, writs, and memoranda prepared by Weinberger and his staff, and similar material prepared by opposing attorneys. Correspondence files include letters with clients and individuals interested in a specific case. Weinberger's clients included: Alexander Berkman, Grover Cleveland Bergdoll, Emma Goldman, and Eugene O'Neill. The papers also include a small number of Weinberg's short stories and plays and correspondence with his nephew, Warren Weinberger. The Harry Weinberger Papers cover Weinberger's professional career from around 1915 until the early 1940s. In that time, Weinberger handled many types of cases, but he took a special interest in people whom he believed had been deprived of their civil liberties. As a result, Weinberger defended many aliens, immigrants, anarchists, and radicals. Two of Weinberger's most celebrated clients were the anarchists Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman. Another client of Weinberger was the wealthy draft dodger, Grover Cleveland Bergdoll. Most of Weinberger's clients were, however, neither famous nor wealthy. Many were referred to Weinberger by service agencies like the American Civil Liberties Union, the League for Amnesty of Political Prisoners, and the Worker's Defense Fund. In the later part of his career, Weinberger became an expert in copyright law, representing many writers, including Eugene O'Neill, in copyright and plagiarism suits. Weinberger corresponded with many prominent figures in connection with his legal work. His correspondents include Roger N. Baldwin, William A. Black, Alice Stone Blackwell, Harry M. Daugherty, Albert DeSilver, Elizabeth G. Flynn, Agnes Inglis, Daniel Kiefer, Robert M. LaFollette, Alvaro Obregon, Elmer Rice, Upton Sinclair, Lincoln Steffans, Norman Thomas, Frank P. Walsh, Thomas E. Watson and Stephen S. Wise. The papers provide information on United States policies toward aliens, anarchists, and radicals in America during and after the first World War. The papers also contain material on United States immigration and deportation policies and important materials on Emma Goldman, Alexander Berkman, Ricardo Flores Magon, and Tom Mooney. There is, however, very little personal material on Weinberger in the papers. Biographical information can be found in Weinberger's "A Rebel's Interrupted Autobiography" published in the American Journal of Economics and Sociology in 1 October 1942

Title:
Audrey Wood Papers, 1863-1984 (bulk 1900-1984).
Correspondence, photographs, business and financial records, playscripts, appointment books, clippings, awards, theatrical memorabilia, and scrapbooks document the personal life and professional activities of literary representative Audrey Wood, her husband and business partner, William Liebling, and their clients. The papers consist of personal files from Audrey Wood and William Liebling's New York and Connecticut residences, business files from the Liebling-Wood office dating 1937-1954, and files created during her employment from 1954 onwards at the Music Corporation of America (MCA), and its successor organizations. The earliest material, dating from the mid 1800s, consists of photographs and personal correspondence and records of Wood's family. Wood's relationship with Tennessee Williams is well documented in the Client Files Series with correspondence, manuscript fragments, contracts, and box office statements for many of his productions, including The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire, and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Other clients with significant materials in this series include Martha Gellhorn, Dorothy Heyward, and William Inge. Woods' husband, William Liebling, also a well known agent, represented actors and directors. Records relating to his clients are found in the Client Files Series and in the Liebling-Wood Agency files in the Subject Files Series. His personal records and correspondence, including a large amount of correspondence with U.S. Senator Jacob Javits, are filed under Liebling in the Subject Files.

Castellón, Federico. Correspondence with Carl Zigrosser, 1933-1971, n.d.
Title:
Correspondence with Carl Zigrosser, 1933-1971, n.d.
The earliest letters from Castellón cover his travels in Europe and his response to the countries and art there, the progress of his work and it's reception. Letters from Madrid relate anecdotes about Salvador Dalí and the delights of the museums there. Paris news includes Castellón's inclusion in a 1935 exhibit of Spanish artists working in Paris and his sighting Alice B. Toklas and Gertrude Stein in the galleries. Upon Castellón's return to New York, his lengthy letters detail the progress of his work and the financial demands of his family, sharing a studio with Henry Mangravite, his surrealist style's reception, his many plans to escape to "Utopia," money trouble and a thank you note to Zigrosser for a loan that enables Castellón to get away to New Orleans. Zigrosser arranged for Catellón to spend the summer of 1939 at Yaddo, a colony Castellón would return to. His letters from Yaddo recount the suicide of Richard Berman (Arnold Höllriegel), a refugee reporter from Vienna. A longer letter from Yaddo describes in detail his life there, the food, the architecture, Marc Blitzstein's political turmoil, Elizabeth Ames and her affair with Leonard Ehrlich, his dislike of Rudolf von Ripper, and the others at Yaddo: Nathan Asch, Martin Gumpert, John Cheever, David Diamond, Herman Broch, Jean Starr Untermeyer, Maureen Whipple and Newton Arvin. The letters are full of details and gossip. Also mentioned is his search for commercial work and his continuing money trouble. Some letters are addressed to Laura Canade, another employee at Weyhe Gallery and Zigrosser's future wife. In 1940, Castellón writes about serigraphy, commercial work at PM magazine, his fiancée Hilda Field and the new residents of Yaddo: Bruce M itchell, Miriam Cohen, Agnes Tait, Marion Greenwood, George Platt Lynes, Monroe Wheeler, and Katherine Anne Porter. After Zigrosser left Weyhe Gallery for the Philadelphia Museum of Art, he continued to support Castllón's career, supporting his application for a Guggenheim Fellowship. Castellón's letters describe meeting Alfred Barr and Una E. Johnson, his travels in the American southwest on his Fellowship, his concerns about being drafted and his 1942 stay at Katherine Anne Porter's farm. In 1943, Castellón was drafted, and his few, very emotional letters from this time describe his depression and alienation from art, his camouflage assignment under scenic designer Jo Mielziner, and eventual posting to India and China. From the war on, the correspondence is less frequent, but the letters are still jammed with details, descriptions and plans. Comments about the new painting, critics and exhibitions have a touch of bitterness to them. Castellón describes the new painting as empty, insincere, falsely intellectual rule-bound. His surrealist, representational style is out of favor. He writes about the changes at Weyhe Gallery and his growing discontent with Erhard Weyhe. He continues to write about plans for print portfolios and travelling, his Guggenheim Fellowship to Rome, and his friendship with John Taylor Arms and Adolf Dehn, two artists from an earlier generation. There is a gap in the correspondence from 1952 to 1963. A very long letter from Castellón details financial transactions, various career alternatives, printmaking ventures and the difficulties of teaching. He describes several projects with Atelier Desjobert in Paris and Abe Lublin in New York (Lublin is also doing mountains of work with Jack Levine), and his own on-going relationship with Associated American Artists and Sylvan Cole. Late letters describe his own print collecting in Europe and his frustration at the Philadelphia Museum of Art's declining to accept a complete set of his prints because they would not take his printing plates as well. The last letters describe Castellón's approaching departure to take up residence in Paris. Included in the printed matter are two issues of a publication of James Monroe High School in New York, exhibition announcements, clippings, reproductions of Castellón's work, and some exhibition catalogs.

American Ballet Theatre records 1936-ca. 1967
American Ballet Theatre was founded in 1939 with the intention of creating an American company of international stature, a museum of the dance, “which would preserve the best of the classic tradition of Europe and at the same time lay the foundation for a new tradition, American in concept and spirit.” Its guiding principle was to encourage collaboration between artists with no single choreographer taking precedence. The records of the company attest to the pursuit of these goals.

Crain, W. H. W.H. Crain Costume and Scenic Design Collection ca. 1650-1993 (bulk 1900-1960).
Title:
W.H. Crain Costume and Scenic Design Collection ca. 1650-1993 (bulk 1900-1960).
The bulk of the collection consists of original renderings of costume and scenic designs for plays, operas, ballets, revues, and film, augmented by works of art on paper, costumes, prints, and other materials. Represented in the Artists series are over eighty costume and scenic designers ranging from the Bibienas in the seventeenth century to Jo Mielziner. Though the work of French, British, and Russian artists is present, the emphasis is firmly on twentieth century American designers. Subseries A. Renderings, ca. 1650-1993, contains over 850 study sketches and preliminary and final renderings executed in a variety of media for productions staged in the United States and Europe. Subseries B. Other Materials, 1819-1979, contains materials that relate to specific artists but which are not renderings, such as costumes, ephemera, reproductions of original renderings, and works of art on paper. Notable items include costumes by Léon Bakst and Nicholas Roerich for Ballet Russe productions of Narcisse and Le sacre du printemps, and an Edward Gordon Craig set model. Other designers who are well represented in the Artists series are Percy Anderson, Lemuel Ayers, Luigi Bartezago, Cecil Beaton, Alexandre Benois, Attilio Comelli, Edward Gorey, Archie Gunn, Robert Edmond Jones, Charles Karl, Arch Lauterer, William Henry Mathews, Jo Mielziner, James Reynolds, Nicholas Roerich, Alessandro Sanquirico, Sidney H. Sime, Ernest Stern, and Dolly Tree. The French Music-Hall series contains souvenir programs and original costume and scenic designs. Although many of the renderings are probably from the Folies-Bergère, it is likely that other Parisian venues are represented. The bulk of the series comprises renderings for showgirls' costumes by Ranson, Alec Shanks, and Zig, and scenic designs by Dany. The Toy Theater Prints series contains colorful plates intended for children that show the characters and settings for plays. The bulk of the series consists of prints for over twenty plays that were popular enough in London for British publishers to issue sets of plates as children's versions. Most of these plates were published by Benjamin Pollock, I.J. Dyer and Co., or John Redington. Completing the series are four folders of undated French and German toy theater prints published by Imagerie Pellerin and Verlag J.F. Schreiber. The final series, Sources, contains assorted materials that illustrate popular styles of dress.
