Consisting chiefly of correspondence between Bass and his publisher re his biographies: The Green Dragoon... (1957, re lives of Banastre Tarleton and Mary Robinson); Swamp Fox... (1959, re career of Gen. Francis Marion); and Gamecock... (1961, re life of Gen. Thomas Sumter). Includes letter, 21 Oct. 1978, Marion, S.C., to Rita [Horton McDavid], re trips he and his wife had made to visit family members in Utah, Texas, and New Orleans and explaining that his health had forced him to cancel autograph parties for the book, Ninety Six: the Struggle for the South Carolina Back Country (1978), even though he understood that "the book is selling very well." A separate run of correspondence, 1941-1969, (also in Box 1) consists of 420 letters, chiefly carbon copies of outgoing letters from R.D. Bass discussing personal, family, and professional matters. Bound items include: May 1925 issue of The Carolinian containing Bass' poem "A Spring Sunset"; notebook, ca. 1925, with class notes taken by Bass in George A. Wauchope's Shakespeare course at the University of South Carolina; 2 scrapbooks, 1927-1983 and 1975-1984, containing biographical information and obituaries, information re Bass' induction into the South Carolina Hall of Fame, certificates of award, publicity releases and book reviews re the Ninety Six book, and correspondence with Banastre Tarleton Tinling and editors at Henry Holt & Co., Inc., and Holt, Rinehart & Winston, Inc.; and 3 scrapbooks, 1955-1972, containing pictures, correspondence, reviews, and newspaper clippings re The Green Dragoon (1955-1958), Swamp Fox (1959-1960), and Gamecock (1960-1972). Contains specimen correspondence of President Dwight D. Eisenhower (29 May 1959), who wrote to thank Bass for inscribed copies of The Green Dragoon and Swamp Fox, and Walt Disney (16 Dec. 1959), who replied to a letter from Bass re "Swamp Fox," the Disney series inspired by Francis Marion's military service. The Swamp Fox series aired on Disney's television show, 1959-1961, and Walt Disney Productions marketed various related products, two of which are included in Box 1: a Swamp Fox comic book (issue of Mar.-May 1961) and sheet music (1959) by the Walt Disney Corporation. Both items feature photographs of actor Leslie Nielsen in character as Marion. Comic book titled: "Swamp Fox: a Redcoat turns Rebel"; and sheet music, "From the Walt Disney ABC-TV Production... Swamp Fox / words by Lew Foster, music by Buddy Baker" (1959).
