Howard's letters describe his journey to Washington, D.C., life in camp at Arlington, reviews, camp fever, war news and rumors, the battle of Fredericksburg and subsequent mud march, his Colonel (and briefly General) Dexter R. Wright for whom he worked as waiter and clerk, camps at Newport News and Suffolk, a clerkship at General George H. Getty's headquarters, the killing of a Zouave colonel by General Michael Corcoran, General John Peck's destruction of a railroad bridge, skirmishes near Suffolk, Confederate relic collecting, looting and foraging, former slaves working for the Army and practical jokes played on them, Portsmouth, Va., and the "blackberry raid" up the Peninsula to Hanover and King William Counties. Almost all the letters contain enquiries after family and friends. Letters from the U.S.S. Marmora discuss gunboat operations on the Mississippi, Yazoo and Red rivers including the seizure of a possible spy and raids in surrounding country. There is also a preliminary draft of a report, 1863 May 12, on the seige of Suffolk, Va. There are two letters from his brother Charles, also on the U.S.S. Marmora. The collection also contains a sketch of General George Washington Getty's headquarters, 3rd Division, 9th Army Corp, Suffolk, Virginia. Several letters contain tiny sketches of camps and one of the ironclad "Nahant." The collection also contains his reminiscences which extract his letters and contain some official documents and orders; an 1883 letter from Sen. O.H. Platt; a family photograph; and a 1913 application to a soldiers' home.
