The Playscripts and Promptbooks Collection contains promptbooks, stage managers' workbooks, preparation and rehearsal copies, and unused scripts for 100 dramas, comedies, musical comedies, and other dramatic works, many of which were staged in New York or London. The majority of the items in this collection are marked copies that appear to have been used in the production process. The collection is dominated by material associated with a handful of managers and producers. Two promptbooks marked in John Philip Kemble's hand record stagings at Covent Garden in 1805 and 1816. The office of the American producer Charles Frohman was the source of typescripts, mostly unmarked, for eighteen plays, many of which were produced at the Empire Theatre in New York or in London between 1901 and 1913. Also included are materials for stagings by Arthur Collins at Drury Lane, by the British theater manager Frank Hiam, and by Wilson Barrett, Annie E. F. Horniman, and R. H. Burnside. Other noteworthy material relates to playwrights and theaters. Arthur Wing Pinero is represented by a heavily revised copy of The Profligate; Lillian Hellman, by a souvenir promptbook for The Children's Hour; Dion Boucicault, by an incomplete holograph manuscript for Janet Pride; and Lord Edward Bulwer-Lytton by a promptbook for Money. Other authors include Augustin Daly, W. Somerset Maugham, J. M. Barrie, Cecil Raleigh, Benjamin Webster, and Richard Rodgers. In addition to the John Philip Kemble and Arthur Collins promptbooks for Covent Garden and Drury Lane, the collection includes promptbooks for the Portsmouth and Adelphi Theatres.

Jennings, John Joseph, 1853-1909. John Joseph Jennings collection, 1881-1909.

Title: John Joseph Jennings collection, 1881-1909.

The collection consists mainly of correspondence, the majority being letters from Jennings to his wife, Emma, written while on an extended visit to England in 1906. Other letters to Jennings include those from Lew Dockstader, Charles Frohman, Alf Hayman, Lillie Langtry, Tom McGill, and Joseph Pulitzer. There is also a holograph letter from Samuel L. Clemens to a "Miss Smith". The collection also contains manuscript items: a draft of a novel, "To H--l and Back" by Jennings, a story beginning: "Un jour le bon Dieu..." by Sarah Bernhardt, two poems by Ella Wheeler Wilcox, and a play by an unidentified author, "The Renowned Mons. Duval". In addition, there is a small notebook containing autobiographical information about Jennings.

Davis, William James, 1844-1919. William James Davis correspondence, ca. 1876-1937 (bulk 1890-1919).

Primarily correspondence plus reports, newspaper clippings, receipts, play bills, and legal documents of William J. Davis, Chicago theater manager, most concerning his work as manager for several prominent Chicago theaters such as the Grand Opera House, Columbia Theatre, Illinois Theater, and Iroquois Theater. Letters were received from many theatrical companies and producers, such as Klaw & Erlanger. The collection also includes many condolence letters after the Iroquois Theater fire (1903) and after the death of his first wife, Jesse Bartlett Davis (1905). Letters to Mary Ellen Davis, his second wife, are included (ca. 1920-1937). Some additional items relate to the Iroquois Theater fire and Davis' subsequent trial and acquittal on manslaughter charges. Miscellaneous materials include weekly theater reports, expense reports, etc., and materials relating to the Friar's Club roast of Davis.
