Title: Skipwith Revolutionary War Collection, circa 1776-1824.

The Skipwith Revolutionary War Collection consists primarily of the papers of Nathanael Greene, Major-General of the Continental Army. During the latter years of the war, Greene commanded the Southern Army, which had suffered from weaker commanders. Materials in this collection were donated by Kate Skipwith, a descendant of Greene. Primarily, materials include correspondence from important Revolutionary figures, such as George Washington, John Hancock, Thadeus Kosciuszko and others to General Greene. Topics in these letters include reports of Native American involvement in the War, troop morale, battle descriptions, troop movements and more. Other notable items in this collection include a sheet of Continental currency, a 1777 hand-drawn map of Philadelphia operations, and portraits of Revolutionary figures.

Written during Huger's command during the siege of Charleston, and including his first mention of withdrawing from the slow British advance: "Dear Sir / I [took?] post with Col. [Peter] Horry's horse and twenty-five of Baylors on this side of Cooper River, in order to cover the embarkation of the troops--Shall leave Capt. Fogartie's company and what few of the Dragoons that are here to remain on the east side of the River--shall withdraw with the continental and state horse--it being impossible to procure forage in this part of the country--Being in great want of waggons--I have got Col. Harrington of the North Carolina militia to spare me sixteen [illeg] which shall first employ in bringing down the shot and afterwards to supply the cavalry--I shall have a few barrels of Flower down here the day after tomorrow and can procure you 15000 weight of Bacon. Am your servant Is Huger."
