J. B. Matthews (1894-1966) was a Methodist missionary, college professor, author, lecturer, and prominent conservative spokesman. Collection consists of correspondence, memoranda, statements, speeches, reprints, clippings, broadsides, newsletters, press releases, petitions, and other printed material, chiefly 1930-1969. The principal focus of the collection relates to the work and research of Matthews and his associates in the area of anti-communism, particularly in connection with Matthews' role as Director of Research for the Special Committee on Un-American Activities of the U.S. House of Representatives (1938-1945), Executive Director of the Permanent Subcommittee on Government Operations of the U.S. Senate (1953), and a consultant for John A. Clements Associates. Many of the organizations, newspapers, periodicals, and persons represented in the collection have various leftist, socialist, communist, radical, or pacifist (especially anti-Vietnam War) connections.Individuals represented in the files include Ralph Abernathy, Bella Abzug, Roy Cohn, John Foster Dulles, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Michael Harrington, Alger Hiss, J. Edgar Hoover, Jesse Jackson, John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Coretta Scott King, Joseph Lash, Joseph McCarthy, Carl McIntire, Benjamin Mandel, Richard Nixon, Aristotle Onassis, Lee Harvey Oswald, Linus Pauling, Drew Pearson, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Louis Untermeyer.

This segment of the Jewish Archives of Greater Buffalo consists of the records of the local Jewish community and among these are the cemetery records of Erie County Lodge 300, consisting of two ledger books, and one CD-ROM. The Erie County Lodge Cemetery Records are also available through the website, Jewish Buffalo on the Web: http://jbuff.com/erie_county_lodge_cemetery_recor.htm Another component of the collection has to do with the Jewish community's religious matters which consists of local Temple and Shul records such as the meeting minutes of the Buffalo Board of Rabbis and records of the Buffalo Council of Jewish Congregations, the citizenship papers dating back to 1844 of Emanuel Newman, an early leader of the Buffalo Jewish community who was active in the affairs of Temple Beth Zion, and information and documentation on other local congregations including Temple Beth El, Temple Beth Am, Temple Shaarey Zedek, and B'rith Israel. The collection also includes materials of general interest about the Buffalo Jewish community such as records that document various local organizations, agencies, and activities of the Buffalo Jewish community. Also photocopies of Xeroxes made by Professor Selig Adler which include a photograph circa 1940 of the Buffalo Jewish Choral Society and a recording with singer Sidor Belarsky, surveys, correspondence, memoranda, membership lists, committee reports and documents on the Jewish Hospital Association, 1920-1928, such as a minute book and constitution, reports of annual meetings and special meetings and an index of past members of the United Jewish Federation as well as a scrapbook for the 1927 Jewish Federation Campaign. Also included are material pertaining Deported Persons and Refugee Matters, and the Papers of Max M. Yellen and Dr. Gerhard J. Falk and Dr. Ursula A. Falk.

Title: Abraham I. Shiplacoff Papers and Photographs Bulk, 1915-1934 1895-1962

Abraham I. Shiplacoff (1877-1934) was born in Russia in 1877 and came to the United States in 1891. In 1914, he became secretary-treasurer of the United Hebrew Trades. Politically active in the Socialist Party, he was the first elected Socialist Assemblyman from New York City in 1915 (serving three terms) and led the Socialist delegation in the Legislature opposing intervention in World War I. He was also involved with the International Pocketbook Workers Union, the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America, the Socialist Party and the National Labor Committee for Palestine. The collection includes materials pertaining to these affiliations, including: correspondence with Samuel Gompers that documents the conflict between the American Federation of Labor and the United Hebrew Trades.
