Agents appointed to conduct interviews of paupers eventually comprised a Dept. of Settlement and Bastardy. Agents examined inmates at almshouses and other state institutions to determine if they had official settlements or family members responsible for their support, or if they could be transported back to their place of origin. Series consists of volumes recording these examinations. Information varies over time, (1) Examinations by agent John Locke, 1852-1857. 1 v., arranged by institution visited (generally lunatic hospitals, almshouses, and reform schools), consist of notes on examinations of state pauper residents admitted in the year previous to the interview. (2) Examinations at Bridgewater Almshouse, 1855-1861. 2 v. Case no. 1-841, 842-1650, almshouse no. ca. 99-10295, internal indexes. Examinations from Apr. 4, 1855-Sept. 5,1861.
