Idwal Hubert Edwards (1895-1981) was born in Freedom, New York, and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1917. In February, 1918, he was transferred to the Air Corps. He received his commission as a Second Lieutenant in Infantry Reserve on August 15, 1917, and received his regular commission as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry on October 26, 1917. His service during the period between the World Wars included assignments in the Philippines, Hawaii, and at many different bases around the continental United States. He attended the Command and General Staff School and the Army War College. Edwards had assumed command at Randolph Field, Texas prior to the outbreak of World War II. During the war, he served as Assistant Chief of Staff for Training on the War Department's General Staff. Assigned to the European Theater in 1943, he served as Chief of Staff of U.S. Air Forces there. In 1944 and 1945, he served as Deputy Commander of the U.S. Air Force in the Mediterranean Theater. From March, 1946 to August, 1947, Edwards served as Commanding General of U.S. Air Forces in Europe. At the time of the official creation of the United States Air Force, he was assigned to the role of Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel at Headquarters, U.S. Air Force. In 1950, he was named Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations. On July 23, 1951, Edwards was appointed Commandant of the Air University at Maxwell AFB, Alabama. He served in this role until he retired from active duty on February 23, 1953. In 1954, Edwards was briefly recalled to active duty with the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Personnel, as president of a special board of officers. He reverted again to retired status on March 9, 1954. The career decorations received by General Edwards include the Distinguished Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Legion of Merit, Commander of the Order of the British Empire, and Commander of the French Legion of Honor. He was rated a command pilot, combat observer, and aircraft observer. General Edwards died on November 25, 1981.
