Wolfe family. Wolfe family papers, 1890-1958.

The Wolfe family papers, 1890-1958, contain family correspondence, including letters of Thomas Wolfe; manuscripts; legal documents; clippings; scrapbooks; school notebooks and composition books; printed material; notes and reminiscences of family members; personal items that belonged to Thomas Wolfe or members of his family; and other materials. In addition to family correspondence, there are letters from Maxwell E. Perkins, Wolfe's editor at Charles Scribner's Sons; Edward C. Aswell, Wolfe's editor at Harper & Brothers; and Elizabeth Nowell, Wolfe's literary agent and later his first biographer. There is considerable correspondence documenting the work of Wolfe's literary executors and the administrators of the Wolfe estate. Perkins, in addition to being Wolfe's first editor, was the first administrator of the estate; Aswell took over after Perkins's death in 1947. Letters chiefly relate to members of Wolfe's family, most frequently Julia E. Wolfe, Fred Wolfe, and Mabel Wolfe Wheaton. Also included is correspondence with friends, relatives, and admirers of Thomas Wolfe. In addition to correspondence by and about Thomas Wolfe, there is correspondence among family members and other relatives, friends, and acquaintances that documents Wolfe family life in Asheville, 1890-1958. In addition to correspondence, there are also typed and autograph manuscripts of Thomas Wolfe, including the original typed manuscript annotated by Wolfe of his 1938 speech at Purdue University and typed and autograph drafts of several of Wolfe's plays; school and college notebooks; themes; and quiz books. Personal items belonging to Wolfe include his passports, diplomas, copies of transcripts of his college record, and other materials. Printed material includes items by Wolfe that belonged to either the author or members of his family; among these are several copies of his prize-winning college paper The Crisis in Industry and a copy of the limited edition of To Rupert Brooke. Other printed material is from the Wolfe family's collection of articles, essays, and reminiscences. There are also some unpublished materials relating to Thomas Wolfe and his family, including notes and reminiscences by Mabel Wolfe Wheaton and Julia E. Wolfe; transcriptions of recorded interviews with Mabel Wolfe Wheaton made by the Library of Congress; several notebooks of family reminiscences; and Mabel Wolfe Wheaton's collection of clippings about Thomas Wolfe and the Wolfe and Westall families and materials from scrapbooks she compiled that contained clippings, pictures, letters, and telegrams.

The collection contains a copy of Wolfe's last letter, 1938 Aug. 13, Seattle, to Maxwell Evarts Perkins and a copy of a letter, 1945 Dec. 29, Fred W. Wolfe to William B. Wisdom on his mother's death. There are also 5 letters from Wisdom to Miller regarding Wisdom's knowledge of the Wolfe family, his Wolfe letters and Miller's article on the author. Letters and cards from Mabel Wolfe Wheaton answer questions on Wolfe's death and criticize Miller's article. Perkins and Edward C. Axwell write to Miller on the same subject. Newspaper clippings and a pamphlet discuss Wolfe, his mother, and the Wolfe home in Asheville, N.C. Included in the collection is a holiday magazine article, Notes from a Western journal, containing selections from Wolfe's diary of his last trip before his death.

Also included are legal papers and financial documents belonging to Thomas Wolfe and members of the Wolfe family and papers relating to the Thomas Wolfe Memorial Association. There are also subject files on Thomas Wolfe and his family, and on persons, places, and events related to Thomas Wolfe. Clipping and photocopy files make up the largest part of the collection, reflecting the Hatchetts' goal of obtaining copies of every article written about Thomas Wolfe. They include articles written by Thomas Wolfe, articles written about Thomas Wolfe and his family, and bibliographic materials related to Thomas Wolfe. There are also audio and visual materials relating to Thomas Wolfe, including audiotapes of Thomas Wolfe's family discussing him, audiotapes of Wolfe Fest at St. Mary's College, videotapes featuring Fred Wolfe, and videotapes based on the works of Thomas Wolfe. The collection documents Edward C. Aswell's responsibilities as administrator of the estate of Thomas Wolfe. Most of the correspondence consists of letters to and from members of the Wolfe family, especially Wolfe's brother Fred Wolfe and sister Mabel Wolfe Wheaton. The correspondence relates mostly to estate matters, but there are also some personal family letters. There are also letters requesting permission to publish Wolfe materials, requesting access to the Wolfe manuscripts at Harvard University and the University of North Carolina, requesting tickets to the New York performance of "Look Homeward, Angel," and about the publication of Aswell's article in the Saturday Review of Literature (6 October 1951) entitled "Thomas Wolfe Did Not Kill Maxwell Perkins." Also included are two copies of that article and one typed carbon copy of "An Introduction to Thomas Wolfe," written by Aswell for the abridged edition of "Look Homeward, Angel" that was published by Signet Books of the New American Library.

The papers contain Wolfe family correspondence, correspondence with Maxwell Perkins and Edward Aswell in their roles as executors of the Thomas Wolfe Estate, personal correspondence of Fred Wolfe, manuscripts about Thomas Wolfe, legal documents including executors' reports of the estate of Thomas Wolfe, correspondence about the Thomas Wolfe Memorial Association and the restoration of the Old Kentucky Home, family memorabilia, and volumes that chiefly relate to the Wolfe family. Family correspondence covers the years 1882 to 1977 and includes letters to and from Fred Wolfe, Mabel Wolfe Wheaton, Julia E. Wolfe, Frank Wolfe, W.O. Wolfe, Effie Wolfe Gambrell, and other members of the Wolfe and Gambrell families. Some of this material relates to Thomas Wolfe, but much of it concerns family matters. There is considerable correspondence between family members about the Thomas Wolfe Memorial Association, which shows the part the family played in the restoration and preservation of the Old Kentucky Home. Correspondence with Maxwell Perkins and Edward Aswell relates to the Thomas Wolfe Estate. There is also correspondence with members of the New York law firm of Ernst, Cane, and Berner, and especially with Paul Gitlin of that firm who succeeded Aswell as executor of the Thomas Wolfe Estate. Other correspondence consists of Fred Wolfe's personal correspondence, some of which demonstrates his efforts in preserving the memory of Thomas Wolfe's life and work. There are also subject files containing material relating to the Thomas Wolfe Memorial Association, documents from the Thomas Wolfe Estate, other legal and financial documents, materials relating to real estate in Asheville and in Florida, correspondence about grave markers in Asheville, a few manuscripts of published and unpublished articles about Thomas Wolfe, and a few copies of Fred Wolfe's speeches about Thomas Wolfe. There are playbills from productions related to Thomas Wolfe or his work, tourist guides for Asheville, and publicity materials about the Thomas Wolfe Memorial Association and the Old Kentucky Home. Wolfe family memorabilia includes commencement invitations; some business cards for the Old Kentucky Home; and a small printed advertisement for the North Carolina, Julia E. Richard Gaither Walser (1908-1988) was a professor of English at North Carolina State University in Raleigh and author of numerous works, chiefly relating to North Carolina's literary heritage. The collection contains correspondence, clippings, photographs, and other materials chiefly relating to North Carolina' literary heritage. Files on individual authors and literary subjects dominate, with special emphasis on the life and works of Thomas Wolfe. Other authors represented in the collection include Doris Betts, Helen Bevington, James Boyd, Richard Chase, Jonathan Daniels, Wilma Dykeman, Charles Edward Eaton, John Ehle, Paul Green, Bernice Kelly Harris, George Moses Horton, Gerald W.
