The collection contains ships papers for the schooner "Maria," captain Joseph Storey, bound for St. Sebstians, 1801 June 10, signed by Thomas Jefferson and countersigned by James Madison; and a photostat of ships papers for the brig "Alexander, " captain William Miller, bound for Guadeloupe, 1807 November 5, signed by Jefferson and countersigned by James Madison. Also a photostat of a letter, 1815 May 25, Thomas Jefferson to Charles Clay regarding the management of his property; a photostat of a letter 1802 April 17, Talleyrand to Mr. Jackson, the British ambassador at Paris, inviting him to accompany the "First Consul" to Notre Dame on Easter and noting that the crowd may prevent a strict observation of rank and precedence; and a photostat of a letter 1814 November 26, James Monroe to Thomas S. Jessup, commander of the 25th Regiment Infantry conveying orders concerning his posting to Conncecticut, the British fleet and the proposed convention. Also a photostat of a reprieve, 1816 December 16, for highway robbers Clinton Adams and Randal Terrier signed by James Madison; a photostat of a pardon, 1818 December 24, for Francis Pic, convicted of setting up a billiard table, signed by James Monroe; a photostat of a letter, 1859 January 11, James Buchanan to Sidney Breese, appointing him a marshall of the northern district of Illinois responsible for the census; and a letter [original and photostat],1860 January 7, Sidney Breese to James Buchanan declining the position. Autograph additions to the collection include a third person note from Capmbell Morfit to his father, 1830 October 29, requesting a loan of 25 cents; a poem "Knocking, knocking," by Harriet Beecher Stowe, 1891; a poem (hymn) "I need thee" [every hour] by Annie Sherwood Hawks, 1892; a poem [hymn] "The lamb of Calvary" by Ray Palmer, 1884; a printed Christmas menu for the Maxwell House, Nashville, Tenn., 1874; and a deed of sale (indenture), 1800 April 1, for Rockingham County land belonging to the late John Rice.
