These interviews were recorded 1975-1980 originally to provide spoken narrative and work-related environmental sounds for use in the production of audio-visual exhibits at Berea College Appalachian Museum. The interviews and in some instances, photographs document a wide variety of Appalachian traditional crafts, occupations, and expressive culture from areas of Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia. Subject areas include blacksmithing, carpentry, chair making, coal mining, corn shuck doll making, dulcimer building, gardening, herb lore, logging, pottery making, quilting, religion, spinning, vegetable dying, and weaving. The material relating to Pine Mountain Settlement School in part addresses the school's interest in preserving various aspects of traditional crafts and expressive culture. However, there is also a substantial amount of information regarding the schools founding, founders, and educational philosophy.

The collection consists of videotapes, manuscript materials, and slides. The manuscript materials, in one folder, consist of a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) grant proposal, rough drafts of that proposal, and notes for a documentary about E. C. and Orna Ball, old-time country music performers of Rugby, Va., dated Oct. 20, 1967, and Oct. 1976. Four videos contain recordings of E. C. and Orna Ball performing traditional religious and secular folk songs and talking about their lives with interviewer Francine Nave. One tape contains a 30-min. performance in Mountain City, Tenn. by the song and comedy duo Lynn and Morris. Eight videotapes are recordings of interviews with Willard and Ora Watson of Deep Gap, N.C., in which Willard Watson talks about making toys and Ora Watson talks about farming, bee keeping, gathering roots and herbs, raising children, and quilting. The Watson interviews were conducted by Francine Nave, with camera work by Larry Nave. The slides, in one folder, depict E. C. and Orna Ball, along with Richard Blaustein of East Tennessee State University, at the August 1975 Mountain City (Tenn.) Fiddlers Convention.
